Basically, the only "urban artist" who may break through without heavily watering down their content is Giggs
no one will want to listen to that flow, regardless of the content
considering he has sold 100,000 (and rising) mixtapes in 2years, without ANY advertisement other than a big ryde/mykal million etc shoutout, u are evidently wrong
100,00? Don't believe that.
u better believe it

http://www.myspace.com/trapstargiggsGiggs isn’t just another rapper. Not many street artists can boast sales of 100,000 mixtapes over two years, and none can lay claim to owning their own shop in order to keep up with merchandise demand. But since 2008, Giggs (so named because he used to giggle all the time) is the only name that’s mattered where British rap is concerned. It was in this same year that the south London bred rappers debut, ‘Talkin’ The Hardest’ freestyle, became the unofficial anthem on road. With mixtape sales going through the roof, Giggs’ debut album Walk In Da Park (which he made in just two weeks and has notched up over 20,000 sales of to date) sold out nationwide, within just hours of hitting the shops. He also beat the likes of chart topping artist Dizzee Rascal and Chipmunk to win the BET Award for Best UK Hip Hop Act at a star-studded ceremony in Atlanta, USA.Hailing from Peckham, Giggs (aka Hollowman, an alias he adopted following a stint in prison and a desire to move away from street activity) is regarded as the missing link in the hip-hop game. Known for his slow flow, deep vocals and poetic use of slanguage, his laid-back manner has had critics compare his rap swagger to the likes of Jeezy and The Clipse.Head honcho of the SN1 (Still Number 1) crew, he delivers the negatives and the positives with his aural reality checks – something that has proved a battle when it comes to beating down the doors of the more mainstream industry. But having attracted the likes of Joel Ortiz, CTR and Green Lantern in America, back home he’s been working with everyone from Sway, Skepta and Wiley to Shola Ama and The Streets, on the forthcoming single ‘Slow Song’ (produced by and featuring Mike Skinner). Radio support comes from long-term co-d Tim Westwood as well as fellow Radio 1 DJs including Zane Lowe and Mistajam. So, while Peckham waits for a re-generation programme, Giggs will be busy building up ammunition for his second album and pushing other artists from the SN1 camp to keep the kids happy. Word.

if it was simple to do there would be alot more of them
Spot on. The amount of artist that have attempted the cross over pop record and have failed is alot. The end product is very deceiving the process in making those records is the genius behind it. Any one can make a song. YES I agree. But not every one can make a chart hit/pop hit. Are these songs fraff? - Thats down to opinion/taste. But we all have to agree that its does its job. Its harder than these lot think.
Agree with the above. But I'm only on page 4 so I'll probably be quoting more.

this is the moist door that the industry wants urban artists to come through, water their sh*t down, turn into 21st century minstrels and make a vocoder track aimed at 16 year old slags to make them feel special.thats why we need to support people like giggs, hes opening his own door for people that dont want to water down their sh*t, when the album drops everyone thats serious cop it so the labels can see that raw, gritty road rap guys can sell units without distorting their voices and singing about some chick.
see statements like these arent helpful because they distort the perceptions of reality.cos its as if ur sayin set man should jus talk about greaze because thats what U want them to talk about.giggs has quite a few girl track/to his mum etcmaking ur music smoother(watering down) doesnt always mean selling out

Are any of you aware of the 'passive massive'?It's a phenomenon where people will buy something simply because of what it is, and not its quality.Take Cherly Cole's 'Fight For This Love' for instance, when it came out how many reviews/ members of the public were like "LOL WTF IS THAT sh*t. THAT'S AWFUL."Now who is at number one in the charts with album and single?
Actually, there's a much more powerful force called the silent majority.People will always call/text/email to complain about something. People hardly ever make noise if they like something or just "dont mind" it. The media made out that Cheryl Cole's song was hated by everyone but what was that based on?- a dozen or so music journalists- 100 or so tweets- 50 blog postings- 200 or so messages on forums. But, there are MILLIONS of people in the UK that buy music. They are the "silent majority" and just get on with buying/voting how they want without expressing their opinion on the internet etc. We see this force all the time in Elections, X-Factor and even with our parents (how many times have we tried explaining someone ultra-famous to our parents who dont know or care about them)
