Arsenal Summer Transfer Window

The Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin has been speaking to the press today, and he seems to be pretty certain that Arsene Wenger will not be signing another goalkeeper this summer, as he already has four of them in the squad.“They say that the signings haven’t finished.” said Arshavin. “We have four goalkeepers and we conceded none the two matches played so far.“But, seriously, if we’re talking about Schwarzer, it looks like that is off the agenda.’The Russian star also seems to think that Wenger will be promoting a few more youngsters to the first team this season, which would negate the need for any new signings. He is especially hopeful that Jack Wilshere will become a regular first-teamer.Arshavin said: “Wilshere, Frimpong and Nordtveit have trained with the first team from day one, so no one considers them beginners.“If Wenger calls them up to the first team, it means each has talent. The rest depends on themselves. Wilshere is only 18, but he has worked with the first team already for two or three years – longer than me. He went on loan last season, but I hope this season that he really helps us.”Nordtveit is a 6ft 2in centre-back that has been gaining experience on loan at Lillestrom and Nurnberg, so perhaps he could be the natural partner for Thomas Vermaelen this season. He has just turned 20 so he can hardly be considered a kid?
I really don't know what to make of this...

ARSENAL are ready to launch a £10m bid for Per Mertesacker next week – if Everton refuse to budge on Phil Jagielka.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already had a £14m bid for England defender Jagielka rejected by the Merseysiders. The Frenchman is still weighing up whether to raise that offer to £18m – but Starsport understands David Moyes has said that Jagielka must not be sold with the new season only weeks away. So Wenger is looking again at German giant Mertesacker, who has two years left on his contract at Werder Bremen.World Cup star Mertesacker, 25, would jump at the chance to join Arsenal. And sources close to him last night confirmed that his future will be resolved next week.Arsenal still need defensive reinforcements despite signing £10m centre-half Laurent Koscielny from French club Lorient.

Yesterday Arsenal were in talks with Spanish side Osasuna regarding the sale of Manuel Almunia. This news is hardly of great surprise considering that he has been left out of the first two pre-season friendlies and has been training with the rest of the squad perfectly well, so there is no fitness issue keeping him from playing. I believe that there is one major sticking point, Osasuna are the only team interested – the reported interest from Athletico Madrid a few weeks ago is dead at the moment – and Osasuna can’t afford his wages, the £50,000 a week he is currently on at the club. The way round this might be a reduced transfer fee, reduced to the point where the fee is pretty negligible and the funds could well go in the direction of a improved bid for Mark Schwarzer.

Do you know how f*cking VEX I'll be if we actually spend £14mil, let alone £18mil on Phil Jaglielka.EIGHTEEN F*CKING MILLION.Moyes>>>___________

Jaglielka is NOT Everton captain. He's not worth more than we paid for this damn French defender. Moyesweather is just a moneymakingguy.

How did we ever get put in the position where we handed Almunia a 50k contractguy must have saw that and started looking around for ashton kutcher
Wengers policy of handing big contracts to players because their one of the best in their position at the moment
If that would have been the case then surely Ashley Cole would still be a Arsenal Player ?

You're trying to tell me Jagielka isn't better than Kocielsny? Are you serious mate?In today's market? Taking into account he's an integral Everton player, English, experienced, etc, £18mill is about right...

But this is why we then dont buy English. Allow Cahill and Jagielka being our record signing. Besides Jagielka knows we bid, if he wants to come, he knows what to do...

Random question, but when was the last time Wenger signed a relatively young British player that had some experience?I can think of Theo and Ramsey, but they were from Championship and had barely played. Bids for Smalling and Bale come to mind to, but again they only had a handful of appearances between them...He'd never sign someone like Jagielka after his good season with Sheffield Utd would he? Suppose he did have an interest in Magic Ashley but never made Watford an offer?

Richard Wright/Francis Jeffers, whichever one came last, think it was Wright.Did we bid for Bale? Swear it was just United and Tottenham and Tottenham did what they always do and nip in before the season done, then tried to do it with Nani and United's hand was forced.Nah not really, think they have to be young and few games, last Championship player we was linked with Adam Matthews of Cardiff. That said Jagielka moved to Everton on the back of relegation, which I think immediately puts Wenger off move than anything else. Nah he said he didnt need players at the time and it was January window. We got Kyle Young anyway, lol.

England World Cup No 1 David James will end his career at Celtic - after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger turned down the chance to sign a goalkeeper who will be 40next week. The former Portsmouth man is braced for the most hectic 48 hours of his life. He marries long-time partner Amanda on Sunday, and on Monday will have talks with Celtic which could end with him finishing his career north of the Border in the Scottish Premier League. It can also be revealed that Wenger turned down the chance to sign James despite facing a goalkeeper crisis at Arsenal. The Gunners boss will instead step up his efforts to land veteran keeper Mark Schwarzer, despite failing with an initial £2m bid. There is no guarantee the Australian will move across London from managerless Fulham, and it will certainly not happen unless Arsenal increase their offer for a man they want as both player and coach. It is the news that the Gunners have turned down an opportunity to sign James, who is two years Schwarzer’s senior but vastly more experienced, which will shock an Arsenal fan base hoping for an end to the club’s five-year trophy drought.James, who had an offer withdrawn to stay on as player-coach role at Portsmouth, is one of the fewEngland players whose reputation was untainted by the World Cup.He is also wanted by Sunderland as replacement for their Scotland keeper Craig Gordon, who is out of action after fracturing an arm in training, while Fulham are expected to make a move if Arsenal sign Schwarzer.Wenger’s side have been dogged by goalkeeping inconsistency which has cost them too often in past seasons.Spaniard Manuel Almunia will be on his way as soon as a new club is found for him, which leaves Wenger with Poles Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny plus Italian Under-21 star Vito Mannone, who is likely to be loaned out.Celtic will be happy to take James north if new manager Neil Lennon can persuade him all his demands can be satisfied in Glasgow, including European football.

ARSENE WENGER is monitoring Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, putting Manuel Almunia's Arsenal future further in doubt. The Dutch goalkeeper was pivotal in his country's run to the World Cup final and has been at Ajax since 2001.Although Ajax have been boosted by Martin Jol's snub to Fulham, the former Tottenham boss has been told he will have to sell players if he wants to strengthen his squad.Luis Suarez, Ajax's most saleable asset, looks set to stay at the club after Jol's decision to stay on as manager as the pair enjoy a good relationship but other stars will have to be moved on.Goalkeeper Stekelenburg has attracted Wenger's interest and the Arsenal manager is now weighing up a bid.Wenger claimed he does not have a number one choice as goalkeeper, with Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski failing to command his confidence.Stekelenburg would be available for around £4m and at 27 would represent a more viable long-term option than Wenger's other target, Fulham's 37-year-old Mark Schwarzer. An Ajax insider said: "I don't think Luis Suarez will leave us this summer but as for the others, there's a good chance one or two have to leave."I know there's an English club interested in the goalkeeper, for sure."

Arsenal are keen to sign Everton’s England defender Phil Jagielka. The London club have already had a £10million bid for the 27-year-old turned down but will build the pressure this week.Everton boss David Moyes has often stated Jagielka is not for sale but Arsenal are refusing to give up.They are prepared to increase their offer to £15m knowing that is the minimum to elicit a flicker of acknowledgment from Merseyside.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has signed French central defender Laurent Koscielny, who is also comfortable in midfield, from Lorient in a £10m deal. But the plan is to add extra steel, English preferably, in time to build a partnership. Arsenal will return from Austria late on Tuesday and serious talks should reconvene after that.Jagielka, who cost Everton £4m from Sheffield United three years ago, signed a five-year contract at Everton in May last year.
TBH anything between 12-16m Moyes should let him go, cos Moyes would go Arsenal for MUCH less.

Panathinaikos have admitted they could find it difficult to reach an agreement with William Gallas. The French defender is a free agent after his contract with Arsenal expired earlier this summer and there will be no shortage of suitors for such an experienced campaigner. To bring in a player of Gallas' calibre without having to pay a transfer fee is an attractive prospect for many clubs, including Panathinaikos. The Greek giants have contacted Gallas but are unsure whether they can meet his wage demands.Panathinaikos vice-president Dimitris Gontikas concedes the club may have to identify other transfer targets."We made an offer to the player, but it is difficult to reach an agreement," Gontikas told the Daily Mail."We are continuing talks with his representatives and hope to find a solution, but it's not easy."Gallas interests us, but we'll look elsewhere if there are other possibilities."Paris St Germain and Juventus are among the other clubs to have been linked with Gallas in recent weeks.
Various places claim Gallas is demanding a three-year contract worth £35,000 a week. Which is baffling cos Arsenal offered him 80k a week for one year or 55k a week for two years. Maybe he demanding a hefty signing on fee on top of the 35k.

Igor Akinfeev has set his sights on a move to either Arsenal or Manchester United as he looks for a new challenge away from Russia. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who has already made 40 appearances at international level, attracted admiring glances following his performances for CSKA Moscow in last season's UEFA Champions League. He has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford for some time, with current United No. 1 Edwin van der Sar drawing towards the end of his career.Arsenal, meanwhile, have been tipped to bring in a new shot-stopper this summer and Akinfeev has spoken to compatriot Andrey Arshavin about the club.Akinfeev admits he would be keen to join one of the Premier League giants, having heard glowing reports about Arsenal from Arshavin."Arsenal and Manchester United are two of the very best clubs in the world," Akinfeev told the Daily Star Sunday."If both of them are going to be looking for keepers this summer - or even the next summer - then of course I am interested.Honour"I have spoken with Arshavin about Arsenal and London life. He has only had good things to say about the club and the city."He said some very nice things about me going on to be the best goalkeeper in the world - and that he would like me to reach that goal at Arsenal with him."Of course there is every chance this will be the last season for Edwin van der Sar."To be the No.1 for Manchester United would be a great honour too."They are the biggest football club in the world and, to be their No.1 for a length of time, you know you will have success."Juventus have also expressed an interest in me - but Arshavin has sold England to me very well."Akinfeev does not believe CSKA would block a transfer if the opportunity to move on presented itself."My contract doesn't expire until 2013 but I have a great relationship with my president," he explained."If the right offer, both for me and the club came in, I don't think anybody would stand in my way."I have been in Russia for a lot of years now and feel ready for a new challenge."

Manchester United and Arsenal and considering moves for outstanding Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil.Werder Bremen hope that the 21-year-old will sign an extension to the contract that ends in just 12 months, but Ozil is understood to be keen on a move to one of Europe's giants. The Germans insist they would rather lose him for nothing next year than sell him before their Champions League campaign kicks off, but a £20million bid now would be hard to resist.Ozil is a Barcelona fan and dreams of moving to the Nou Camp, but the Catalan giants and rivals Real Madrid have delayed making a move for him while they look at other targets.Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is also a big admirer but has other priorities, such as Benfica's Brazil midfielder Ramires.According to The Sunday Times, the stalemate has opened the door to United and Arsenal, who may test the water with a £10m bid. Both clubs are understood to be monitoring the World Cup star's availability and could steal a march on their rivals by making a decisive move.Manchester City have also been linked, but Roberto Mancini has already signed David Silva from Valencia and has a plethora of midfield options.
