Real Madrid Concerned With Lassana Diarra's Genetic Medical Condition

Madrid doctors are worried about the progression of the Frenchman's disease...

Real Madrid doctor Carlos Diez has received the French national team medical staff's report on the condition that has kept Lassana Diarra out of the World Cup this summer with some worry, according to AS.

Lass was diagnosed with a hereditary condition often found in people of sub-Saharan African descent called sickle-cell anemia. The genetic disease causes one's red blood cells to flatten, making them look like sickles under a microscope rather than their customary donut-shape and make them less efficient in transporting oxygen to the rest of the body.

While the condition can serve as a favourable trait in countries that have high rates of malaria - those with one allele of the gene are more resistant to the disease - it can also result in a number of health risks and painful complications, including stomach pain, inflammation of the hands and feet, and severe pulmonary and central nervous system risks.

In Lass' case, the painful complications from the condition were revealed with the French national team because of the team's training ground location, at 3,000 feet above sea level in the Alps. Doctors are now trying to determine the extent of the condition and the possibilities of treating it.

Los Blancos have not ruled out enrolling Lass in a blood study in order to learn more about the condition and the steps that might be taken in prevention. In the United States, where 8% of the African-American population carry the gene, the governing sports bodies have made it obligatory for all players of African descent to be subjected to testing, so to avoid fatal accidents during play.

Wow. Didn't know Diarra had SC.

He's a f*ck*ng soldier to be playing professional football, how was he playing in the PL in the winter months? Going to the f*ck*ng Alps could of been deadly depending on how severe his SC is.

Ratings up 100000000000 fold.

Whatttt?

That means Domenech indeed did f*ck him up

High places = less oxygen in air

Cold weather = blood vessels contract

Which would lead to sickling

Not just him, also Henry, Ribery and a few others, this isn't good when you got Gourcuff, Toulalan and there was someone else as another one of the groups you are just asking for serious trouble. You know as well as I do that the sooner Blanc comes in the better because this France squad needs a massive change.

Certain areas are safe but egos need to be shown the door.
