Wavant
I've had a bullshit detector ever since I could remember & I'd always challenge them if I genuinely thought I was right. This was same with me and tbh its one of my strengths and im glad it wasnt beaten out of me like most african parents manage to do.Whenever I was told you do something this way. Id always be like why its better/faster to do it this way or telling my parents that what they were teling me or the way they were doing things didnt make sense. The main one i remember was my dad tryna discourage me from being so focussed on football. He said stay in school go to uni you can earn the same money and be just as happy doing something else you enjoy. My response was you went to uni why arent u rich then? I caught the swiftest box to my 12 year old head. :lol:Affs and football are a funny thing.

Ella
lol, Affs and anything that's not Law or Medicine. I don't blame them-they only want the best for us, I just wished they pushed us to be the best in whatever we do rather than push us into careers we have no interest in.I am quite lucky though that my mum's quite laid back (well for an African anyways). We were talking about careers a while back and she said that she wanted me to "do medicine" and that when I mentioned fashion to her, heart sank and she prayed that I'd grow out of it. But she realised that the reason why she had felt so unfulfilled (career-wise) all these years was probably because she was trying to please her parents rather than herself. Popular Post Taurus
When I was 16-17 I was into all kinds of madness, road beefs, shotting etc. My mum found weapons and drugs in my room all the time and would cry her eyes out. I couldn't see her upset anymore so I moved to my girls yard at the time. I carried on with the lifestyle for another 6 months and thought f*ck this, I need to get my life back on track and make my mum proud. I got a job as a football coach for yutes at Power League (I was lucky to get a hook up) and I also helped my boys dad at his warehouse on the weekends. I use to help my mum with things all the time for example told her write a shopping list every weekend so I could shop for her and make her smile, she then asked me to move back so I did. I enrolled at college shortly after, left all the illegal sh*t behind, now I'm starting Uni in Sept, gpt two sources of income and have finally made my mum proud after all these years.IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU TO DO THE SAME KIDS, LEAVE THE ROAD LIFE BEHIND IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

Captain Planet
Pos'd twice. My parents have contrasting views. My Dad tried to apply pressure to me when I was young but we don't have that relationship where he can have any influence on me and he now knows it so he's given up trying to mould me into anything, he's working on my sisters, failing.Mum looking at her upbringing I would expect her to want me to be a rocket scientist, he literally lived in poverty with her vast number of siblings, but she says she loved her childhood, and even though there wasnot always food on the table my grandpa managed to send them all school. But my mum just tells me whatever makes you happy in life, last year she earned 14k but she enjoys teaching and working with young/special needs kids, she wants to start up business in Ghana for her retirement thats it.As long as shes alive, she lets God run the mess and she'll just keep on trooping until it's her time. Is it a mental illness or ru being sarcastic? I seriously do that exact thing.I get this tooThink it comes from a lack of overtly strict and authoritative parents. You don't have to be a tearaway to have parents who're relaxed, but you gain so much independence that when your parents DO tell/ suggest you do something you're like '...Who are you? I'M the boss of me, I know whats best'It's a bit of a burdenWould rather have that than permanent scars from belt beatings though tbh.
Supernova
Thats quite a sick explanation Esq. Makes alot of sense really. The worst is when somebody ELSE tries to advise me. If one of my friends gives me advice I don't ask for.Infact I don't take advice off anybody that isnt exactly where I would like to be in what they advising. VENOM
m12 wat r u talkin about? f*ck off with dat weak talkmy family has had a family insurance business which is now 4 generations deep, i'm expected to step up, infact i'm next in line to run sh*t, its been past on & on for yearsi'm not wasting my life, i'm good tbh but i just want to experience other things which conflicts with current family affairsu lot probably won't understand generational family business expectationsLOL bro you can dress it up all you like. it is weak because you're scared to live your own life. It dont matter if your dad is Bill Gates and wants you to take over Microsoft or Sanjay who owns the local corner shop.i agree with Veni, and for the most part disagree with what you're saying. its the parent's responsibility to help shape and mould their child's future, sometimes this has to be harshthe problem today is the younger generation is just generally more rebellious and society is ready with open arms to permit and support that rebellion.perhaps this is why there is such a tiny black middle class in the UK. YET in the carribean and in Africa (or at least in the 3 west african countries im familiar with) there is a strong middle class.im yet to see a top earning doctor, accountant, scientist, engineer, investment banker, cry about wishing he/she was allowed to study media studies and music technology instead.just face the fact that as a generation we're more rebellious cos society allows it.education definately is NOT everything, but i dont see black british kids trailblazing in business either, NOR the Arts, so the most thats about is football
