Manchester United are in pole position to sign Wilfried Zaha, the Crystal Palace forward, before the close of the transfer window this month.

Arsenal have also been in the running for Zaha, but their interest is thought to have cooled given their reluctance to get into a bidding war with United and with Theo Walcott expected to sign a new contract to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

United have held talks with Palace and are confident of securing a deal soon, although a fee for the 20-year-old, who made his England debut in the friendly away to Sweden last November, has yet to be agreed.

Palace set out their negotiating position by putting a valuation of around £20 million on Zaha when it became clear that he was in demand, but it is thought that the Barclays Premier League leaders have proposed a package worth up to £12 million during discussions. The npower Championship club are believed to be holding out for closer to £15 million.

Sir Alex Ferguson was thought to be prepared to bide his time over Zaha, but, just as he had been forced to move earlier than intended for Phil Jones, given the interest from elsewhere in the former Blackburn Rovers defender in the summer of 2011, so the United manager instructed the club to approach Palace amid concern that Zaha could join a rival.

Tottenham Hotspur appeared to accept defeat when it became clear that United were the player’s most likely destination. Arsène Wenger was also in the hunt for Zaha — who can play as a winger or second forward — but with Walcott close to settling his future and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also to call upon, the Arsenal manager is thought to believe that he has enough options.

United are understood to be open to the idea of loaning Zaha back to Palace for the rest of the season, something the Championship club are keen to ensure as they push for promotion. United agreed a deal for Chris Smalling in January 2010 but allowed the defender to remain at Fulham until the end of that season.

Ian Holloway, the Palace manager, has been concerned that speculation about Zaha’s future has had a negative impact on his performances, but an in-form Zaha could be key to their hopes of promotion.

The arrival of Zaha would inevitably lead to questions about Nani’s future at Old Trafford, but Ferguson insisted recently that he remained hopeful that the unsettled Portugal winger would sign an extension to his present contract, which expires in 18 months.

United face Liverpool at Old Trafford at Sunday lunchtime, when victory would move them ten points clear of Manchester City, who do not play Arsenal at the Emirates until later in the day, although it remains to be seen if Nemanja Vidic starts for United.

The defender is thought to have found the going tough since his return from knee surgery at home to Sunderland on December 15, with Ferguson keen to ensure his captain is eased back into the fold after playing only six weeks of football in 12 months. Vidic has started three of the past five games, with Ferguson mindful that he is not ready to play more than once a week.

Wayne Rooney, who is on compassionate leave, could be weeks away from a return to the first team.

The United striker took out almost a full-page advertisement in the Liverpool Echo yesterday to pay tribute to Rosie McLoughlin, the 14-year-old sister of his wife, Coleen, who lost her battle with Rett syndrome, a brain disorder, at the weekend. He described Rosie as “an inspiration to me”, while other relatives also paid their respects.

Villas-Boas last month told reporters he had given Adebayor the green light to play in the tournament.

But the ex-Manchester City star, 28, has revealed that his boss is yet to give him personal backing.

Adebayor said: “That is what he said to the Press but not what he said to me.

“There is a difference between what you say to the Press and what you say in private.”
