PopT
Just a few questions Can a UK Hip-hop/Grime Artist Make it big in the UK without making music like Wiley, Wretch, Dizzee, Tine Tempa (not to say they are not making Good music), Is there a formula to becoming successful in the music industry What will it take for a UK Artist to cross over to the states People talk about the music industry is full of politics, Race etcs....... can anyone talk on it

Barney Stinson
Working in A&R especially in the UK is fucking stressful at the moment, its hard enough to know what to sign/develop, but labels are losing cash and arent willing to give talent/developers many chances, so you find a lot of people having to play it safe, ie artists making the same kind of on trend tunes, and a lot of the same kind of people being signed. This obviously stifles creativity in the UK music industry, but there also a big problem of when something different works, people either just write it off as an anomaly, or everyone jumps on it and kills it. Need to just encourage talented artists to make good credible music, fuck a chart position, or breaking the US.

Lionel & Dave
watched that Iggy Azaelia Breakfast Club interview yesterday don't know her music at all but she came across well some girl in the studio pitched in tho and tried bring her down a peg for jumping off ratchet type music and on to pop she explained she only did that for the UK market where 'runway type music' sells imho this 'runway music' is the selling of ones soul realistically who listens to that? people don't want to be just great artists these days, they want the perceived lifestyle that goes with it makes you wonder at that point, is it art at all?

Hipster
Working in A&R especially in the UK is f*cking stressful at the moment, its hard enough to know what to sign/develop, but labels are losing cash and arent willing to give talent/developers many chances, so you find a lot of people having to play it safe, ie artists making the same kind of on trend tunes, and a lot of the same kind of people being signed. This obviously stifles creativity in the UK music industry, but there also a big problem of when something different works, people either just write it off as an anomaly, or everyone jumps on it and kills it. Need to just encourage talented artists to make good credible music, f*ck a chart position, or breaking the US. c/s Iggy was saying on the breakfast club that the main consumer market in this country do not understand rap it's mostly chart driven. / It is possible, but its hard when the majors don't understand or care which leaves urban music in a fragile state. And by fragile i mean that there is not a lot of power on our side in the industry. The culture is growing and it will continue to grow but this is just the beginning, regardless of the success of the names mentioned don't be gassed they are still faced with adversity. However the rap scene right now is highly saturated with bullshit and this bullshit is being displayed on urban media websites. There are too many freestyle videos and not enough music for radio stations. And f*ck America their consumers have a different mentality and buying behaviour on a much larger scale than us. dub
US will never embrase UK rap, its just a lower form of their stuff. Grime had potential to reach further but we were too busy glorifying gimmicks, rarely supporting any real lyrical talent. I don't think the UK public will ever embrace UK "road" rap artists like they would US artists, its just not being done in the correct way to speak to people. No one's telling a touching story, or even portraying a life that people would want to live - being a gangster in the UK doesn't seem glorious like it does in the American films and music videos, perhaps because its too close to home. / How can a UK rapper not have come close since this guy (edit: probably a bad example, he lived in the US since he was 10)

Marketablity. Talent/hype from here, and moving to the US. It is. Howcomes SAS did not cross over, despite the Roc situation S.A.S was in America... But The Roc was splitting up. Dame wanted S.A.S budget opened up here, Def Jam staff here didnt like Dame cos of the sh*t he was doing. But this is the catch 22, that Iggy is alluding too in the Breakfast Club interview. All of the executives in America, have told S.A.S (as they are not American born, like Iggy isn't) to get a budget opened anywhere in Europe, chart, and then they can get the international deal popping or to short cut all that and find a US co-signer. S.A.S dont wanna play the UK pop game as it sends you down a road thats very hard to find yourself again once inside. Co-signer wise - Cam went awol at the time and when he did pop up the labels didnt trust him (Cam's a known fleecer), Juelz wasn't strong enough name at the time, and when they re-found Kanye it was around the time that GOOD was in the midst of trying to get out of their old deal and he said he couldn't do a situation with any new artists cos his current artists would feel a way.
Benicio del Toney
There are just not enough avenues in the UK for Urban music to thrive like that. In America they have 100's of urban format stations, in the UK we can count on 1 hand the legal stations catered towards us. As an artist you can eat well in America never having been on pop radio once, as an urban artist here you need that radio 1 support and the only way to get that is to dilute the music. Benicio del Toney
Yes But they would have to know how to market themselves etc something like JME but on a bigger scale JME's played a different business model and he's played it ok. If he reinvested all that dough into growing his internet fanbase instead of copping cars he would be even bigger now. But he is 1 of the diy artist success stories for sure. TF S4DK
JME could have only gone so far, for the reasons you said previous. Like Iggy said you can't bankroll yourself forever when your coming from nothing as while there maybe win's, there will also be losses.

TF S4DK
i personally think its possible none of these road rappers have the business mindset from once u get a little buzz u should b doing shows up and down the country like LOADS. theres more of a demand for it then u think Its possible for only so long, there isn't a support system per say in this country or people doing sh*t for the love and progression of culture. They have no music business mindset, but in reality where they gonna learn it, other than in the moment?
Kurtis
pretty sure its not that easy to just get shows up and down the country either due to that form the venue needs to sign
TF S4DK
explain wot u mean by support system A system that helps your progression without having to repeatedly go into your own pocket.
