Semi Final 2 - Netherlands v Argentina

Even though I agreed with Rsonist Messi has been instrumental in Argentina's run to the final.

His goals and assists have been the difference in games, thats all he can do.

It ain't the most spectacular performance ever seen in a WC but if Argentina win the WC he will have made a massive contribution.

He will deserve his place in the football pantheon.

You sure about this?

It's funny because Zidane had a worse tournament in '98 but won it in the final.

Had 4 good games in 2006 but ultimately cost France the final.

Hasn't come close to Messi's club career, Ronaldo too infact.

Constant changes of goal posts, it's getting petty now.

They'll never be an outright best of all-time, however we can put among the greats if he does it on Sunday.

People tend to look back at football with a nostalgic mist over their eyes, like I said to Porchy Maradona had an unbelievable defence in 86.

Up until the last 15 mins of the final they had only conceeded 3 goals the entire tournament.

That is half what Italy conceeded when they won the World Cup in 82.

Nobody can win a tournament on their own, nobody, if they could Maradona woulda been more successful at Barcelona.

Mum's life, I called all the parallel's to Maradona in '86 to what Messi could do this summer.

1. Sabella is a disciple of Bilardo. Played under him, same philosophy

2. Maradona wasn't considered the best player in the world in the same manner Messi isn't at the moment.

3. Messi has to make up for 2010 the same way Maradona had to make up for 1982.

Agree with your post but disagree with this.

Only Pele has done it for club and country multiple times over different eras.

I don't compare players who have played in different eras, too many variables. Hence why I don't think one player can be considered the GOAT.

Preach. Preaaaach

ye but look at his club though

have seen ppl discredit pele with the argument he was playing against a bunch of farmers

everything is opinion

imo cruyff is the goat

What Pele achieved over 12 years isn't opinion, it's fact.

You can say look at his club but end of the day Coutinho at Santos didn't achieve as much as Pele.

You can say look at his country but end of the day Garrincha didn't achieve as much as Pele.

You can say the defending wasn't sophisticated in the 50's but he did it in 1970 aswell when the likes of Moore and Beckenbauer were playing.

The big difference I've seen when goat talk is happening is people will talk about every other players achievements but will try to find excuses against Pele's.

its fact until you compare it to what a next man has done

thats when opinion comes into play no?

comparing pele at santos to coutinho at santos is pointless, what is it an almost 30 year difference? leave it

as for your last point this is the nature of player to player arguments invariably someones achievements r gonna get downplayed

sidebar: would i be wrong in saying most of peles legacy is forged off the back of performances on the world stage rather than the 1000+ goals against migrant workers?

Coutinho was Pele's strike partner at Santos bro.

A brilliant footballer who didn't achieve legendary status with Brazil, read up on him.

That's what I'm saying, only Pele's achievement's seem to get downplayed, make no mistake much of it is tribalism, many don't want a black player considered goat.

When I was younger and less socially aware I was on the side of Maradona, not realising I was propagating the disrespect (like the migrant workers comment) injustice and agenda.

Pele didn't need to handball to win his titles, he trained in order to make those jumps legally, as a true champion trains all facets of his play.

Now imagine if Pele had handballed it and Maradona didnt, does Pele's legacy not go downwards?

Imagine if Pele with all his achievements were white, would he not be elevated? think about it.

Outside the World Cup in 86 Maradona didn't have a great club career at all, why is this rarely mentioned?

Pele's legacy is a result of many things:

Being Brazils all time leading scorer

Being in 3 WC winning squads

Winning 2 doubles of Copa and Intercontinental twice in a row

Getting the better of other goat candidates like Eusebio, Garrincha, Jairzinho for Santos.

Being the youngest player to score a hatrick, play in and win a world cup.

Having never lost an international match when playing with Garrincha

Etc...

the overwhelming majority of those achievements u listed r all international duty accolades no?

as far as race goes 9 times out of 10 pele is the answer when GOAT is the question and he is fifas player of the century so thats pretty decisive

countinho ye that was my bad, but i hear u big homie

cruyff for me is the greatest of all time but a man could easily say platini or zidane or whoever is better and then we have to do the head to head

and when you're dealing with ballers of superior ability invariably it comes down to trophy haul and ofc the world cup is the best of them all

thats why it dont matter too too much how well messi plays, if he wins he's ticked off the last empty box on his resume with at least five years left

and if he scores in the final who is going to believe he didnt dominate in years time when you look at his numbers?

anyways its all long cruyff the player, coach, manager, god >>

LOL this GOAT stuff will be never ending

IMO you can't have 1 goat there would be about 3-5 from different eras

hmmmm

you can never proclaim someone the goat on ability alone so invariably it comes down to numbers

but when you have someone supremely talented who dont stop winning it makes it a lot easier

if messi wins a world cup or three its open and shut imo
