Diego Costa? Alexis Sanchez? MK Dons’ Benik Afobe has a better goal-per-game ratio than both

Posted by Liam Andrews

Benik Afobe MK Dons

Diego Costa? Alexis Sanchez? Wayne Rooney? Not a problem. MK Dons loan star Benik Afobe has a better goals-per-game ratio than all three of the top Premier League attackers so far this season.

Afobe has shone since joining the Dons temporarily from top flight side Arsenal scoring 18 goals in 23 games, including a brilliant hat-trick in the 6-0 thrashing of Colchester United on Saturday (29/11).

The 21-year-old has a better goals-per-game ratio than Costa, Sanchez, Rooney, Harry Kane, Graziano Pelle and Charlie Austin, but Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero does have an exceptional record which even Afobe can’t beat.

In League One, Chesterfield’s Eoin Doyle is scoring more per match than anybody including Afobe and Argentine superstar Aguero with 19 goals in 21.

Afobe’s 18 goals so far has passed former loanee Patrick Bamford’s record of scoring 17 times before Christmas, and will now set his sights on bettering Izale McLeod’s 19 goals before New Year’s Day which he set in the 2006/07 season.

CitiBlog has looked into the statistics of strikers in the top four divisions of English football and has counted all games and goals for their clubs, international games have been ignored – only players who have featured in 10 matches so far are included.

Benik Afobe (MK Dons)

Danny Hylton – 12 in 22 – 0.55 goals per game

Reuben Reid – 11 in 22 – 0.50 goals per game

Marc Richards – 9 in 18 – 0.50 goals per game

Matt Tubbs – 12 in 24 – 0.50 goals per game

Jed Wallace – 11 in 25 – 0.44 goals per game

Paul Hayes – 9 in 21 – 0.43 goals per game

Mark Cullen – 8 in 20 – 0.40 goals per game

MK Dons

Benik Afobe – 18 in 23 – 0.78 goals per game

Dele Alli – 8 in 21 – 0.38 goals per game

Will Grigg – 7 in 20 – 0.35 goals per game

Despite having 29 League One fixtures still to play, the Dons have scored 38 times which puts them well on their way to demolishing last year’s total of 63.

Robinson has guided his side to victory in 61 per cent of their games in all competitions this season which is a massive improvement on 39 per cent throughout the 2013/14 campaign.

In terms of League One, that is a win 59 percentage, compared to last season’s 37 per cent of games ending in a victory.

And it gets even better for the men from Milton Keynes, as they have already won more than half as many games in the league this season than they did in the entirety of the campaign just gone.

You can press all over the pitch, but you can't do it for a full season in 4 competitions with a small squad ala Atleti, Dortmund.

You could see the noticable decline in Peps Barca sides toward the latter end of the seasons, and after a few years the players looked jaded, and Barca retained the ball after they won it so the effect of the pressing on them was relatively minimized, when you have Dortmund & Atletico who's attacking is based around a quick transition

It's difficult to keep up for a full game let a lone a full season. see: dortmund - bayern
