EastEnders cot death complaints top 3,400

Around 3,400 viewers have complained to the BBC about an EastEnders storyline involving cot death and a baby swap.

In an episode on New Year's Eve, Ronnie Branning, played by Samantha Womack, swapped her deceased baby for the new born son of Jessie Wallace's character, Kat Moon.

Complainants have branded the hard-hitting plotline "insensitive", "irresponsible" and "desperate".

The complaints have been received since the storyline was revealed in November.

The majority have come in to the BBC since Friday's episode.

One midwife described it as "so far from realism it will be the last time I will watch this programme."

EastEnders executive producer, Bryan Kirkwood, said: "We appreciate this is a challenging storyline and have taken care to ensure viewers were aware of the content in advance of transmission.

"We also provided action line numbers at the end of each show, offering advice and support to those affected by the issues."

Monday's episode, in which Ronnie struggled to deal with the baby she had taken and Kat did not recognise the baby in the chapel of rest as her own, was watched by 10.6m viewers.

Joyce Epstein, director of the Foundation for Sudden Infant Deaths (FSID), told BBC Five Live that the charity advised on the issue of cot death but not on the "drama line".

She confirmed the charity had put the soap in touch with a woman who had gone through a similar bereavement and who had subsequently spoken to the actors in advance of filming.

Ms Epstein said parts of the script were changed following the Foundation's advice.

Ronnie is leaving the show

EastEnders actress Samantha Womack, whose character has been involved in a controversial baby swap plot, is to leave the show, it has been announced.

The storyline, which sees Womack's character swap her dead child for another baby, has prompted thousands of complaints to the BBC.

However, a spokesman for the actress has refused to comment on reports she quit over the distressing scenes.

A BBC spokesman said the storyline "allows an exit for Ronnie Branning".

The 38-year-old will leave the BBC One soap in a few months.

tbh i dont understand what all the hoopla is abt.

ronnie has lost a daughet she never knew, her father who raped her pushed her over and she miscarried

she now has tried for the third time and after the baby is born the baby is now dead.

The storyline is showing how much anguish she has gone through and now is so desperate to have a baby that she has even stolen one. Exceptional storyline imo

remember she even sent sam bk because she didnt want jack to have to have his baby with her

Yeah, it'd be just like the Eastenders writers to kill off their best storyline in years with some dumb wrongly timed anti climax ending to it,

astEnders bosses have confirmed the soap is to highlight the issue of sexual exploitation in a storyline involving Whitney Dean. The plot sees vulnerable Whitney, played by Shona McGarty, begin work as a prostitute.

Show bosses said the teenager's life will go on a downward spiral after her stepmother Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) leaves, leading her to fall for an "unscrupulous man who ultimately sexually exploits her for his own financial gain".

The soap - which has hit headlines over its controversial baby swap plot - has devised the plot alongside Comic Relief.

An EastEnders spokeswoman said: "EastEnders has been working alongside Comic Relief since last year, devising a storyline that raises awareness of sex exploitation.

"In the long tradition the show has of tackling social issues, this is a storyline that looks to be exploring a growing problem that faces many young women in the UK."

Gilly Green, head of UK grants at Comic Relief, said: "It is vital that we continue to alert young people to the dangers if we are to stop them being exploited and the opportunity to work with EastEnders will make a huge audience aware of this issue.

"We have been working with the EastEnders script writers and some of the young women from projects we support to ensure the story reflects the reality of young people caught up in sexual exploitation."

The charity's chief executive, Kevin Cahill, said the plot would "highlight an important issues" and "help raise crucial funds to help young women caught up in it".

A special 10-minute episode will be shown during Comic Relief's night of TV on March 18.
