Manchester United's Anderson dragged clear of burning car after crash

The Manchester United midfielder Anderson was dragged unconscious from the burning wreckage of his car after a crash yesterday morning that is now the centre of a police investigation in Portugal.

Anderson, signed for £18 m three years ago, spent several hours in hospital after the accident on a rural road in the Geres area of Braga, with witnesses reporting he owed his life to being pulled "lifeless" from the vehicle shortly before it exploded.

According to local reports, the 22- year-old Anderson, increasingly becoming renowned for his partying lifestyle, had spent the night at the Sardinha Biba nightclub before leaving in a £125 ,000 Audi R8. The crash occurred at 7 am when the high-powered car came off the road and hit the wall of a farm before flying into a field.

Although the French-registered car was a two-seater, Anderson had two companions – a friend, whose name was given only as Victor, and a young Brazilian woman, whose details have not been released. It is unclear who was driving but there were unconfirmed allegations it could lead to a drink-driving charge and a possible offence of allegedly having excess passengers. Manchester United were unavailable for comment tonight.

All three were taken to St Mark's hospital but discharged by late morning after being treated for concussion, whiplash and shock. "They had only minor injuries," a hospital spokesman, Roman Fresco, said. The woman is understood to have needed the most treatment.

The Portuguese press quoted the Gestifute agency, which represents Anderson, as saying the former Porto player had suffered an "almighty scare" but would be returning to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation. Anderson ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee in February, an injury that ended hopes of him participating in the World Cup, and he is not expected to be fit until next month at the earliest.

Whether Sir Alex Ferguson knows about the Brazilian's accident is unclear, but the United manager will inevitably be concerned that, at the very least, one of his players had spent the entire night at a nightclub, particularly when Anderson is recovering from a serious knee injury.

Ferguson's relationship with the player, signed from Porto in 2007, became strained last season and Anderson was reputedly fined two weeks' wages in January for returning to Brazil without the club's permission after an argument with the manager. Anderson, who has scored only once during his time at Old Trafford, had been singled out for criticism and dropped from the next match, following United's 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City. He was subsequently omitted for a month and it was in his comeback match, against West Ham United, that he damaged his knee.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson's close friend and former United team-mate, wrote off a £200,000 Ferrari when he crashed into a roadside barrier in a tunnel near Manchester airport in January 2009. He was not injured and police decided not to prosecute the Portugal international.

German sensation Mesut Ozil has revealed that he would relish the opportunity to join Manchester United or Chelsea.

The 21-year-old playmaker saw his profile rocket this summer after a number of impressive showings at the World Cup finals.

His creativity helped Germany secure a third-place finish and ignited interest in his services across Europe.

His current employers, Werder Bremen, accept that they now face a battle to keep their prized asset at the club.

As Ozil has just one year remaining on his current contract, they have accepted that they may need to cash-in now rather than lose him for nothing in 12 months time.

It is believed that a bid of around £12million could force their hand, and that sort of money is readily available to the best in the business.

Top clubs in the Premier League would have no problem finding such a sum and Ozil admits he would welcome a switch to England.

"There are four or five clubs in Europe that you would have to say as a player would be a dream to play for," the youngster said in the Daily Star Sunday.

"When you are looking at moving clubs it's impossible not to pay attention to the Premier League and even more impossible not to pay attention to Manchester United and Chelsea."

He added: "I am a winner and, when I am looking for a new club, I simply look at where I can be the most successful and where I can win the most trophies.

"If you look at the recent history of Manchester United and Chelsea then it's clear that a player can be very successful there.

"Of course clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona are of huge interest and the Premier League's top two clubs are of serious interest to me when the time comes."

While hinting that he could be tempted to take on a new challenge in the near future, Ozil accepts that his future lies in the hands of Bremen.

He said: "I am under contract with Werder for another year and it is impossible for me to say if a deal will be done this summer.

"They may decide that they want to keep me for another season or they may decide to sell me this summer so they can get some money for me. That is up to the club."

McCullough signs for Man United

Portadown's up and coming star Luke McCullough is the latest local footballer to make the move from Northern Ireland to Manchester United.

McCullough, who has captained Northern Ireland at Under 16 and 17 levels, signed for the Red Devils at the beginning of the year on a two-year scholarship deal.

"It's any boy's dream to get any club across the water but to get United, it's an added bonus", said McCullough, who supported the other Reds, Liverpool, his whole life.
