My girlfriend had been having issues with her signal (turned out after everything a new sim sorted it).

But we nipped into the apple shop, got an appointment - it took literally 5 minutes for them to give her a new phone. she doesn't have insurance, didn't ask for a new phone, she's on a contract so it wasn't purchased from Apple. She had no proof of when she got it (not that they asked), they didn't check anything to see if it was still in warrenty etc.

They just said (paraphrasing) 'oh, it'll be a fault with your network but we can try a new phone for you if you have backed up your stuff'

I swear there's money in that. If you've got your phone insured you can take it to Apple shop, get it swapped for a fresh one, call up your insurance company and report it lost/stolen. Get a new one sent and you'll have two iPhones?

I work in an Apple store and can let you know that this is nowhere near guaranteed. You will either get:

The person who follows the rules proper and won't do it unless you can absolutely talk your way into making them believe it is the iphone's fault which isn't that difficult in all honesty

or

Someone who really didn't care.

Point being, don't get too comfortable in trying to make regular trips to do this as everytime a iphone comes in and gets swapped gets recorded, even those phones that didn't require much or didn't get swapped out. They do check the system to see if the iphone has been brought in before and to where and who did the repair.

Hackers at JailbreakMe.com have revealed an iOS vulnerability that could apparently give nefarious exploiters a great deal of control over an iPhone. Apple has promised that a fix is on the way, though the jailbreak group has already issued its own patch, meaning that for the moment, one's best protection against this particular flaw could be to jailbreak one's iPhone -- though that could open it up to other vulnerabilities.
