I wanna go eastern Europe. I don't mind the odd funny look or curiosity but would my life actually be in danger I I went.

P.S I'm black like the ace of spades.

Depends where

I'm guessing you're only looking at visiting major cities, in which case you'll 99% be fine, except for the odd look. Chances of a physical confrontation are non-existent in places like Prague, Warsaw and Budapest. Avoid Russia cos you will get robbed by the police and I'm hearing stories about guys getting their skulls cracked all over the gaff, although this applies to people who are from there, not so much tourists. Belarus is a no-go zone for tourists altogether. I've heard Serbia is really nice but maybe not for a black man. Croatia's meant to be nice. Rest of the Balkans is a shithole. Go to Czech Rep, Poland, Hungary you'll have a good time and your race won't matter. Except if you go Poland just know that the drunken aggression/swingers at night can be madness, the place is full of meatheads

Guest M12 Part 2

I've been Moscow already. liked it a lot. Didn't really go to far outside the centre though. Went "raving" and every girl in the club was a prostitute.

/

Might leave it a while if it's likely I'm going to lynched by a group of guys who look like Vidic.

Might look into Hungary and Poland though.

Anyone been to eastern europe? or know of any places of interest?

Im going to Lithuania this weekend, probably for a week or so, but was looking at the possibility of checking out some other places whilst im around.

My stopover is in frankfurt, so plan to spend a day there, but does anyone have any other recommendations?

Hope them places are hospitable to man like me.. Plan on sticking to the built up city areas unless there is anything of interest in the suburbs

Lithuania has a pretty interesting (and very bloody) history in the last century (russian empire, birthplace of modern jewish culture - used to be like 60% jewish - holocaust, ww2, ussr, russian brutality etc.) but if that's not of interest to you then it's not a great place to visit, especially not for a whole week. I think Vilnius is still the biggest town and it's tiny. If you have to spend a week round there then go to Riga (in Latvia) as well. Or maybe even Minsk, although that could be difficult. 2 days in each of these places is cool. Or you could always just go to Warsaw. Best place in Eastern Europe that's not in Russia is Budapest (really nice city and loads of sh*t going on), but I don't know what your plans/travel arrangements are.

Re. your last line, if you mean you being black then yeah unfortunately that could be a problem for some people. I wouldn't be unnecessarily worried about it, but just be aware that you're not visiting a multicultural, liberal society. On the same note, not everybody there is gonna know English. People who work in hotels etc. will, but not your man in the street.

Thanks for the info..Im going with work, gonna be working/staying in Vilnius @ Greenhall for at least a week, but my ticket is open, so can probably blag it to stick around for 2-3 weeks, but use that for the additional travel etc.. I also have a bit of annual leave to use up when i'm done (before I forfeit it), so am definitely planning at least one excursion.

History is perfect. Should have some interesting memorials or sites to visit.. POS!!!

How far is Budapest from Lithuania? Thats always been on my radar (ish) but dont know much about it.

That or Latvia I guess. Would be a shame to be in that part of the world and not see a little bit of it. Its never really been on my list of places to visit for pleasure, but colleagues who have been already have been talking it up. They just stayed in Vilnius though. Work, Hotel, Bar/Restaurant only.. No culture, no nice pictures, nothing.. Dont wanna follow their pattern if I dont have to

Tiny bit worried about the lack of multiculturalism. 1 colleague has a horror story after recently visiting Kiev, but I try to never really let that kinna thing dictate my attitude for too long.. Especially knowing that theyre a prick after a drink

Heard about this Face Kontrol thing... Hope it doesnt f*ck up a night out..

I kinda doubt that tbh, isn't the AIDS problem over there mainly among the street kids/drug addicts? I didn't see too many of them in that place.

a louvre visit should be a must, you probably cant see it in a day but see as much as you can

there's a v nice shopping mall in La' defense (sp) which you can get to easily on the metro

its very easy to get around on the metro. if visiting the eiifel tower, try and buy your tickets online first

to save the queues, theres extra security now so can be a hassle. and the notre dame church

Carpe, looking to hit Brazil for the world cup, however if I can get out there earlier I will try to go. Anything you believe is must see out there? I'm in the process of learning Portuguese so hopefully it would be a good opportunity to practice it.

How many people have been Brazil before? Well, I'm using Rosetta Stone to learn some Portuguese now and got some colleagues that are helping me out as well, and chatting to the female Brazillian customers I get to practice and learn some new phrases. Looking to go out there for the world cup but if I get a chance to go prior to that then that would be live.

Also what is Colombia saying? I'm also trying to learn Spanish and a customer said it was one of the easiest places to learn it as they speak it the clearest and slowest.

i went rio for 6 weeks in 2009

i absolutely loved it there. it's actually amaazziingg

i didn't feel pressured into doing touristy things so i felt like a carioca :) plus because i'm black i can kinda blend in (even though i didn't dress like a brazilian)

i'm going back hopefully this year and i been learning portuguese as well but in a classroom at beginners level. they think i'm still on jobseekers allowance so it only cost me £40 lol. i don't think audio learning is gonna prepare u for out there though. they can't speak ANY English. i got lost once in the city and couldn't find my bus stop and spent 2 hours gettin home because i couldn't find anyone who spoke english :(

and i think it's chileans who speak spanish the clearest
