Petrol Price Close to topping £1

I was talking about this just now with someone, and they say the barrels have been down to $80 (about 50 quid) dollars from $160 for a long, long time, yet the oil companies are still charging as if the barrels were expensive. They basically get to dictate the price.

According to petrolprices.co.uk, the average petrol price is 127.77p per litre[3] as of the 6th January 2010. Without 20% VAT the rate is 106.475p and without fuel duty 47.525 pence. Hence the total rate of petrol tax (including VAT) is equivalent to 169% added, or 62.8% of the 127.77p paid per litre is tax.
