Virgin Mobile UK becomes latest Euro carrier to offer Google's Nexus 4

nexus4uk114.jpg

Some say that it's "better late than never," and, as of right now, this may very well be a good thing for Virgin Mobile UK users looking to snag one of those chart-topping Nexus 4s. A mere few months after the LG-made handset was first announced, Virgin Mobile is set to join other carriers across the pond in offering Google's sleek flagship. What's more, the Nexus 4 can be had at no cost upfront, so long as interested UKers choose from one of Virgin Mobile's qualified 24-month tariffs. Meanwhile, those of us in the States without a Nexus 4 will have to keep on waiting, as Google Play (and T-Mobile) still appear to be having trouble keeping upwith demand.

Rough hack converts an Optimus G to a Nexus 4, minus the constant sellouts

lg-optimus-g-att-handson.jpg

It's almost a truism to say that the Nexus 4 is near impossible to buy, at least for those who don't want to pay a carrier premium. G33k3r, Rohan32 and others atXDA-Developers may just save us from camping at the Google Play storefront through a new software hack. Their work converts an LG Optimus G's firmware to that of an 8GB Nexus 4 by swapping every LG-customized software element with a Nexus 4 parallel. The nearly identical hardware makes for a very close rendition, at least if you discount the unavoidable design differences. If anything, the work is almost too faithful: the current hack turns off LTE, caps the internal storage at 8GB and even requires using Nexus 4 firmware for future upgrades. It's possible to revert to LG's code if there's jitters, but it goes without saying that the overall procedure carries more than the usual share of risk when even familiar ROM flashers are warned to be careful. Anyone who throws caution (and the price of an Optimus G) to the wind can find their stock Android experience at the source.

Runbo X5 and X3 rugged Android phones moonlight as walkie-talkies, cost just $320

runbo-x5-x3-x1-ces-2013.jpg

We've seen a handful of rugged Androids in our time, but none are as affordable and as weird as these ones at CES. The backstory here is that a couple of Chinese guys in camouflage gear approached us at our CES stage, and after an awkward conversation, it turned out that they just wanted to show us the three rugged phones they brought all the way from Shenzhen. Starting from the right we have the Runbo (like Rambo?) X1 IP67-certified featurephone cum walkie-talkie, which packs a 2-inch 176 × 144 display, a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a laser pointer, quad-band GSM plus 800MHz CDMA cellular radios, 400 to 470MHz range for the software-configurable walkie-talkie, a surprisingly loud speaker and a 2,200mAh battery. This will be available for ¥980 or about $160 on Taobao online store (the Chinese equivalent of eBay) in the next couple of days, and we've been told that there will also be a variant with GPS added.

But the real stars of the show are the two brick-sized vanilla Android 4.0.4 devices. The phone pictured in the middle is the Runbo X5, a device featuring a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 MTK6577 chipset, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, microSD expansion, a4.3-inch 800 x 480 IPS display, an app-triggered laser pointer, an eight-megapixel main camera, a 0.3-megapixel front camera, a super loud speaker (again) and amassive removable 3,800mAh battery. And yes, this also comes with a 400 to 470MHz walkie-talkie radio (up to 10km range; with detachable antenna), along with the additional 850/1900/2100 WCDMA radio, two SIM slots (WCDMA plus GSM), WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. These specs are the same for the Runbo X3 on the left, except for the smaller 3.5-inch 800 x 480 IPS panel to make space for the QWERTY keyboard below it. The best part here are the prices: both of these IP67-certified devices are available on Taobao or the official website for just ¥1,999 or about $320, which is a bargain for both the ruggedness and the fact that these double as standard walkie-talkies. US folks can also order directly from eBay for $380, which is also a steal. But does this surprisingly low price reflect the quality? Find out in our hands-on after the break.

Admittedly we went a bit crazy with the rugged phones (who wouldn't?), but that was only after seeing CEO Jemes Yang (yes, it's Jemes) scaring us a few times by randomly dropping his own devices. What confidence! Interestingly, Yang straight up admitted that his company, Tintele, used to make shanzhai phones, but the direction changed after spending a year developing the bulky Runbo phones. Did the devices live up to their promise of ruggedness? Well, yes and no. While all three devices had pretty decent build quality and took no water damage, we did manage to crack the X5's glass after a few drops onto the concrete. Yang reckons it's because compared to the similarly-shaped X3, the larger screen on the X5 is much closer to the edges, so he'll try to remedy that by increasing the thickness of the surrounding rubber and plastic. As for the software, we didn't get to play long enough to judge its multimedia performance, but the native UI was slick. We shall share more thoughts once we get hold of some review units, so stay tuned.

basically, on any open (unsecured) wifi network, you can capture and use someones session token to access whatever they are logged on to - "facebook, twitter, linkedin and other accounts."

there is also an app to protect yourself from being a victim of the same exploit.

below are some other tools:

Here is my list of hacking tools. I wrote this for another forum but here:

Network Spoofer:

This tool allows you to redirect all traffic on a wifi network to any site you want them to go to! You can also manipulate how people see images etc! So cool! Here is my full TUT and Video on this Tool! http://www.hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=2223024

Piik Network Image Spy:

This tool allows you to view all images being viewed on a network! This is great for people who want to spy on what people are looking at on the network! Full Tutorial + Link Here http://www.hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=2229493

First off I am going to cover the basics on covering your tracks and network discovery.

Mac Address Spoofing:

MacAddress - This app lets you change your wifi Mac Address. It is no longer availabe ANYWHERE! I uploaded the APP here for HF - http://www.4shared.com/android/ywLduiR4/...ss_10.html

Network Mapping:

Network Mapper - This tool lets you scan a network for live hosts and check for open ports.
https://market.android.com/details?id=or...rch_result

Packet Sniffing (Non-Intrusive) :

Shark for Root & Shark Reader - Shark is a popular port (or simular) to WireShark (Based of TCPDUMP). It lets you log network traffic and analyze it on your device!

This is the logger:https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result

This is to read the logs: https://market.android.com/details?id=lv..._developer

Now time for the GOOD STUFF!!!

Below are some of the best hacking apps for android. Real hacking apps! In my opinion these are a lot more effective than most Linux apps!

Session Hijackers:

Faceniff - Pwning Facebook was never so easy! This is by far one of my favorite apps! Faceniff is a Session Hijacker like Firesheep or hamster/ferret but BETTER. No more need to use cain and able and firesheep to hijack. Also who would suspect a cell phone as a hacking tool? Devlish Faceniff will sniff the network and display active sessions and Hijack them! It can hijack the following -
FaceBook
Twitter
Youtube
Amazon
VKontakte
Tumblr
MySpace
Tuenti
MeinVZ/StudiVZ
blogger
Nasza-Klasa

It is a paid app but here is a cracked versions. just install and enter any activation code and bam! http://search.4shared.com/q/1/faceniff

My other favorite Hijacking app is:

Droid Sheep - Droid sheep does the same as above and the author is working on SSL Stripping as well! I personally prefer this over Faceniff! Get it here: http://droidsheep.de/

Finally the ULTIMATE android hacking tool and a special treat for you guys as it is still in beta I am going to leak my APK here!

ANTI - AKA: Android Network Tool Kit. Anti can do a LOT! Here is the description from the website:

[+] Scan - This will scan the selected target for open ports and vulnerabilities, also allowing the user to select a specific scanning script for a more advanced/targeted scan.

[+] Spy - This will 'sniff' images transferred to/from the selected device and display them on your phone in a nice gallery layout. If you choose a network subnet/range as target, then all images transferred on that network - for all connected devices - will be shown. Another feature of the Spy plugin is to sniff URLs (web sites) and non-secured (ie, not HTTPS) username/passwords logins, shown on the bottom drawer.

[+] D.O.S - This will cause a Denial Of Service (D.O.S) for the selected target, ie. it will deny them any further access to the internet until you exit the attack.

[+] Replace images - This will replace all images transferred to/from the target with an Anti logo, thus preventing from attacked used seeing any images on their browsers while the browse the internet, except for a nice looking Anti logo...

[+] M.I.T.M - The Man In The Middle attack (M.I.T.M) is an advanced attack used mainly in combination with other attack. It allows invoking specific filters to manipulate the network data. Users can also add their own mitm filters to create more mitm attacks.

[+] Attack - This will initiate a vulnerability attack using our Cloud service against a specific target. Once executed successfully, it will allow the attack to control the device remotely from your phone.

[+] Report - This will generate a vulnerability report with findings, recommendations and tips on how to fix found vulnerabilities or bad practices used.

Anti supports & uses the followings OSS tools :
nmap
Ettercap
driftnet
THC-Hydra
Metasploit
We will be releasing patch sets for OSS shortly. This should assist developers to compile binaries used by Anti!

MY REVIEW:

Anti Can Steal SSL Encrypted logins (GMAIL ETC), Anti uses driftnet to spy on images a slave computer is viewing, Anti Can Brute Force passwords and even remote exploit a computer using metasploit! Anti also uses nmap to map targets and uses OS Detection! Not to mention anti has the ability to DOS a network. The only downside is that if you want to use a Metasploit hackable computer you need to buy credits however everything else works! I hosted so it stays live.

Here is the leak of my beta apk Black Hat http://www.4shared.com/android/qRlvnG_2/Anti10.html

Finally I have one more cool apk!

WifiKill: This is a simple Denial Of Service App. It will let you either completely freeze a users Internet access or DOS the whole network! Here is the app (Also Unreleased Beta) Rolleyes : http://www.4shared.com/android/gA7J6pdY/...ll-13.html

Finally got this W8 Lumia 920

Very nice. Pleasantly surprised.

The default Nokia apps are actually decent. The augmented reality app for suggesting places of interest depending on where you point the phone is cool. Not sure if any other maker has done this. They probably have.

Any of u lot cut ur sim card down to micro sim before.

I got a guide but how easy is it?

I tried, looked to me like I'd run a perfect job on it, followed the template and shit... didn't work.

I just ended up buying one in the end. You could try a sim cutter http://www.amazon.co.uk/NOOSY-SIM-CUTTER-NYCM-Cutter/dp/B003WPZJJC

anyone know of good cases for the s3

Bought this one recently. Replaces the original back case but has the flip cover attached. It's nice.

This case gets very annoying.

This does the job:
