As a manager, Magath quickly gained respect and became notorious for his hard, grinding training methods, laying heavy emphasis on discipline, fitness and conditioning. Players gave him nicknames like "Saddam" (Saddam Hussein) or “Quälix”, a rhyming mash of his first name Felix and the German verb “quälen” (to torture).[7] He was once described by former Eintracht Frankfurt player Bachirou Salou as the "last dictator in Europe".[8]

"While in charge of Wolfsburg during a training camp in July 2008 in Switzerland Magath declared after a team lunch that training would be canceled for the day. Instead the players would be rewarded with coffee and cake at a nearby location with the provision that the players retain their training attire just in case. As the players prepared to board the gondola that took them up the mountain to the coffee house their delight was soon replaced with horror as Magath told them they would get there by running the full 2362 meters. They ran for two and a half hours straight up the hill with Magath running right behind the team. Their star striker Grafite collapsed before the end and had to be carried down the valley on a stretcher while other players broke down in tears as they reached the summit where they were finally able to enjoy their coffee and cake."

lol Magath is no joke

In another tale Magath is alleged to have asked Hasan Salihamidzic to perform single-arm press-ups when he had suffered a fractured arm.

His two year-spell at Schalke ended amid player unrest, with striker Jefferson Farfan quoted as saying: "Magath's military methods are ugly. Their humanity is questionable."

Ex-Middlesbrough striker Jan Aage Fjortoft, who played under Magath at Eintracht Frankfurt, has tweeted: "Dear Fulham fans. Never will you say again: Players didn't run enough. Players don't train enough. The boss is not clear enough."

He added: "Remember The Special One. This is The Fittest One. Once we were finished running at our TrainingCamp a player had disappeared. We had to look for him. Found him. Had collapsed."

He is pushing players to a ridiculous stage. Well over the edge.

“For him it is natural to squeeze the body of a professional player like a lemon to the final drop. It goes well beyond the stage where it gets unhealthy for the body of a player. This can lead to a short revival but in the long term it leads to disaster. Felix Magath has proved that at every club he has been.

“The way he operates and works with players has nothing to do with getting results. I would never want to treat human beings like he does. I would never want to hurt a player as much as he does.

“When players run so little in a match they are either absolutely exhausted from training or they are playing against their own manager.

“He should ask himself why all the players at the clubs where he worked throw a massive party when he has left. Even when he was successful, they still had a blast once he was out the door.”

Jan Age Fjortoft, the former Middlesbrough striker who played under Magath at Eintracht Frankfurt, said: “Magath was capable of a lot. I am not sure if he could have saved the Titanic, but the survivors would have been in a top fit condition.’’

Germany's Bild newspaper revealed the incredible fine system he operated in his second spell at Wolfsburg, which reportedly ranged from 100 euros for every minute a player was late for training to 1,000 euros for an unnecessary backpass.

He has ordered dawn cross-country runs, held multiple training sessions daily and is even said to have assigned his players essays on their ambitions.
