Am I missing something?
Cafu didn't do shit at club football till the 2000s
Maybe in Europe, he did already clean up in South America though.
Panucci was fucked and yea he did bk2bk CL but Cafu did bk2bk Copa same time.
Plus Sao Paulo beat Milan in the Intercontinental them times.
Cafu did 3 World Cup finals in a row, only person to do so ever.
Brazil the most successful international team ever and Cafu has the most caps for Brazil, more than Pele, more than Zico, more than anybody.
I hear man talking levels but not showing me levels.
im not disputing that at all, cafu had a much better career mainly attributed to his international success but for most of the 90s panucci was better then him and there wasnt really a point in time where cafu was THE right back in world football, just his consistency at being in the top 3/4 in his position
my point is for a long time panucci was the best right back in the world and when he started to decline guys like thuram, carr, cafu himself and zanetti all held that claim to be the best right back in the world for short periods.... but dani alves has been undisputed best right back in the world much like panucci for a long period of time... alves has held that title without opposition for nearly 8 seasons
imagine panucci wasnt a regular for italy until his 30s because of disagreements with the manager, shows what the difference a good international career has on your cv

But what was Kompany doing so far back from the line?
Surely he's the defensive unit leader, the rest of defenders follow his lead. If he's dropped back then so should everybody else.
look at it again
at the beginning messi is about 5/10 yards offside, he runs back into line with kompany, who starts moving to the threat on the right, the ball is then played to an onside messi and demichelis chases him...
kompany at fault 100%
Messi runs back into line as he sees Iniesta can drive into the space (i personally think it would be sucide to try and play the offside trap against Barcelona but hey) The defensive shape will have to break or allow Iniesta to continue running down on goal. As Kompany is the closet defender, he has to be ready to confront Iniesta.
If he holds his position and Iniesta scores because he failed to close down he'd be crucified, especially because the danger came from his side coupled with him being the free man.
There is no immediate danger coming from Demi's side, if Kompany has to close down Iniesta then Demi is the free CB, it's his job to pick up Messi in that situation imo.
If you wanted to disagree with Kompany being so deep then that's fair enough but I side with the fact that everyone should be following his line.

Iniesta is 60 yards from goal and messi is through on goal. That's way too early to press so in that situation Kompany done the right thing by dropping as their was no pressure on the ball.
What he did wrong though was allow too muh space inbetween himself and Demi. Also I'm not sure he even knows messi is there, would need to see the whole thing again.
Agree with you that Demi and the rest of he defence should've dropped 5 yards with Kompany though

But if Kompany was originally pushed up 5 yards in line with the other 3 defenders then messi is too far offside to run back into an onside position and there is only 1 pass for iniesta to play which is out wide and because the gap between iniesta and kompany is a lot closer if he does run at him then kompany can either win the ball back or more likely hold him off and commit the foul 40 yards from goal.
If the pass does go wide then its a 1 on 1 with zabaleta who if beaten messi is waiting for the cut back(which is what im sure messi was planning for) then you start pointing fingers at demichelis if he can't get back in time
but you definitely need to do your job first before worrying about the 2nd phase, which kompany was doing.... too worried about messi
edit: remember city were attacking on the right wing, where navas lost the ball there is no reason why kompany is so deep, if your team is attacking.
Pos all round. Cant believe vip2 will drop the real but these professionals on tv dont analyse like this its a joke

It's definitely too early to press I just think he needs to show Iniesta he's ready to confront (which he does), instead of running back to goal.

But again it's the debate about who's line is correct or incorrect. The problem here wasn't the the line was too high or too deep, it'sthat it was neither and fragmented.
If Kompany would've pushed up that 5 you'd have more than likely had the familiar scenario you described. If everyone would have been in line with Kompany you'd have had a situation where Demichelis would've have had a much better chance of snuffing out the danger. It's really down to a matter of opinion as to who you see in the wrong, but from my experience you need to be aware of where your defensive leader is.
I think if anything the two CB's have equal fault in that goal, like Lewis said you can't have that sort of distance between your other CB. That's something they both should've been more aware about.

C/S
Actually talking about football and respecting each others opinions
Shocked reading through
kompany is partly at fault( but its basically 2 on 1 on that right side, with zab gettin outpaced by whoever was with ini so kompany has no choice but to turn that way)
even if kompany was inline ,one ball to the the player outpacing zab n messi would of bn through, demi wouldnt of caught up,
but yeah i blame navas mostly

Roy Keane on Kompany’s komments: “He’s obviously a bit tired after the game. I’m not sure he knows what he’s talking about.”
