Dunno about meant to take over. He left because he saw a glass ceiling that he'd never get on top of.

He was Fergie's choice, (not sure if that's an endorsement after what's happened this season) Back then Fergie's choice was listened to but proper diligence ruled him out with the two man short list ending up being Cappello and Sven with Sven being offered the job.
