The Wire star Idris Elba has joined the fight to outlaw knife crime in his native London. Skip related contentThe actor, who played a drug dealer and killer in the cult series, is teaming up with charity The Prince's Trust to capitalise on the popularity of the show in Britain, and try to persuade teenagers not to carry knives.Elba chose the Prince's Trust because the charity helped to launch his performing career, by handing him a £1,500 grant, which paid for his place at the National Youth Music Theatre. The actor tells WENN, "There's been a upsurge in knife crime in the last five years. My show The Wire is really popular there at the moment, so I'm hoping I can connect with the kids."He adds, "The underlying issues of The Wire are not a million miles from what British kids are dealing with today. The show is recognised for its realistic portrayal of urban life where kids hang around on corners with nothing to do. They are hand-picked by gangsters that offer them quick money for dirty jobs - this is very similar to the gang and drug culture emerging in some of the U.K.'s biggest cities."http://uk.news.yahoo.com/1/20090428/ten-el...on-c60bd6d.html

lol @ oz being better than the wireoz aint even comparable to the wire it's so far below
Oz probably had the best ensemble cast out of any show before or since The issues addressed were pertinent and interestingThe characters were memorable Though it dipped tremendously during the last season (to the point it made me physically sick), the 1st 3 seasons were just awesomeI loved The Wire but it's gotten to the point where it's in my face so much I can't bring myself to watch another episode again

Oz is stupidly written; pseudo-challenging and intelluectual; and too basic imoSeems like it's written by people who have done no research into prisons except watching movies etc. NB this may or may not actually be true, I don't know-There's like a murder an episode just in one wing of one prison -Anytime somebody wants somebody else dead they just go to a third party and say "this guy don't like you, you should get him before he gets you" and it's done.-2 guns got into the same wing of a prison within a year of each other or somethng.-Cliched dialogue-Isn't making any kind of statement about/examination of society the way The Wire doesIf I hadn't seen The Wire I probably would have thought Oz was pretty good
