One of the creators, David Simon, spent 13 years as a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, a year with the Baltimore police to write Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets (which became a hit TV series), and another year living in a Baltimore ghetto to chronicle their underclass lives for his book The Corner, later an HBO mini-series.His co-creator Ed Burns, meanwhile, spent 20 years as a Baltimore murder detective, before becoming a teacher. Talk about writing about what you know.The result is a show where nearly every conversation, storyline and person springs directly from reality, where characters as diverse as a fearsome stick-up artist and a cigar-chomping detective have direct real-life counterparts, where the street-slang is always on the money, and where many of the actual criminals who act on the show were arrested by the real-life cops playing themselves. carpedeum Posted March 30, 2009 Report Share Posted March 30, 2009 can imagine them gettin some show full of guys from one ends and all RUSHING the story to make deadlines and have a few top names thinkin this will fly.reminds me of the bill "SKENG MAN MASSIVE?" some lol tingman making shows like this and dont even know what pdc stands for or who is beefin with who and why and when etcfor a show to be authentic like THIS you need TIME and real people that KNOW what the story AND situation is about.its not even a script ting either writers aint gonna be what makes it, the way people in high places dont even fathom why knife crime is REALLY so rampant is why they would FAIL CATESTROPICALLY.look at the background of the people involved in the wire and see that its people that have LIVED and SEEN what the show is about.EXACTLYyeh his casting was amazing a mixture of actors, and ex cons to ex gangsters. was able to see past being an 'east manz dem or west or where ever, past being a republican or democrat problem. 4yrs of planning.
