Let's not be too harsh, Almunia was a journeyman, he spent most of his career as a second string or being loaned out in Spain. De Gea has been the #1 keeper for one of the best sides in Spain, and won the Europa League and the Supercup. He has pedigree he is just playing in a league currently unsuited to him, Almunia has always been the footballing equivalent of an ingrown toenail.

Thing is, if this was a young keeper from Germany there'd be a big difference. Spanish players are just not tailored to the physical game.
