PS4 system update detailed. 1.50 live at launch: features listed

Here's the full list of features and what they do:

Remote Play

Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link (Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home). We anticipate that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play. The latest PS Vita system software version, to be released soon, will be required to use PS4 Link.

Second Screen

Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Record, take screenshots, and upload gameplay effortlessly

The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game – the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

Broadcast and spectate gameplay

The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Play as you download

This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

Multi log-in

A maximum of four users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multiplayer game together on a single PS4 system.

Party (Voice chat)

By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

Face recognition and voice commands

Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features; please refer to PS4′s online manual for recognizable voice commands.

Background music player

Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music.

Online Multiplayer

PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

Blu-ray Disc and DVD player

Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature

Which one of you man mans ordered from Blockbuster

Blockbuster has confirmed that it will not honour pre-orders for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

The chain has been breaking the news to concerned customers via its social media channels over the past hour after reports earlier today of the retailer's impending move into administration.

"We are sorry that you will be disappointed and that we can't fulfil any Xbox One or PS4 pre-orders at this time," the chain explained via its official Twitter account.

"We appreciate and recognise the amount of messages about pre-orders. We're sorry some of you haven't received your calls yet. They're happening as we type."

Customers who pre-ordered a console in-store are being advised to visit the shop where they placed their order for assistance. Anyone who ordered a console through Blockbuster's website will need to write to Blockbuster's head office for help.

"Please visit facebook.com/BlockbusterUK for more information. Thanks."

Rental chain Blockbuster is back in administration after a further period of poor sales, the company has announced, but its stores will continue trading while a new buyer is sought.

Sony have the market on lock, no need to rush.  Xbox doesn't care.  2nd tier country to them

Everyone wants Europe and America, don't care about any other regions.

Surely this is fake?  Haven't read it fully but saw it posted.   Can't see this being true

The PS4 will not allow gamers to play MP3 files through the console, cannot connect to external hard-drives and will not let users stream media content from a PC, Sony has revealed, much to the anger of prospective buyers.

In an in-depth Q&A published on the PlayStation Europe blog, the company revealed the bad news, raising serious questions about the device’s merits as a versatile living room media device.

Earlier this year Sony admitted the PS4 won't support audio CDs, so the lack of MP3 support means users will not be able to play their personal collections on the console, unless they’re subscribed to Sony’s own Music Unlimited subscription service. Strangely, there’s no music visualiser built into the console either.

Streaming media content from other devices is a no-go too. Unlike the current PS3, the console also lacks DLNA and media server support, so users won’t be able to share content from their home PC.

In an even larger bombshell, the PS4 will not support external hard drives either, so users will not be able to expand the built-in 500GB storage or plug in a second drive in order to play content. “No this feature is not supported by PS4,” wrote Sony several times in the Q&A blog.

The revelations put the PS4 at a major disadvantage against the Xbox One for those users seeking to make their games console the centre of their living room media experience.  Sony fans are already reacting angrily to the news, with some calling the news a ‘step backwards’ from the PS3, while others have vowed to cancel pre-orders, calling the news ‘unbelievable’.

One user on the blog, posting LBS123 wrote: “You must be reading these comments and you must have expected this kind of backlash to the omission of basic features. I’m on Reddit right now and there are people seriously considering opting for the Xbox just so they can listen to their god damn music. Let alone the streaming of content from a media server. It’s madness.”

In somewhat better news, Sony revealed PS3 and PS4 gamers will be able to battle or join forces with each other online for cross platform multiplayer action.

The company said cross platform online play is ‘technically possible,’ in Wednesday’s blog post. However, it will be down to individual developers to device whether to build the functionality into their PS3 and PS4 games.

“The functionality is technically possible and some developers may choose to support it for their titles,” Sony wrote.

The feature would, it seems, benefit both developers and gamers who want to play together despite not owning the latest console. A quick game of FIFA or a Call of Duty deathmatch over PS4 and PS3 would certainly be an opportunity fans would welcome.

However, that snippet is a bright spark in an otherwise black hole of bad news for some prospective PS4 buyers. It seems that Microsoft got all of its unpopular features out of the way early, giving it time to repair the damage. What will Sony do if the backlash continues? Could we see another next-gen reversal from one of the big two?

Should be true, seen a lot of talk about it this morning on Twitter. Would of liked to be able to stream videos from an external HDD so that is a bit disappointing. MP3's and Media Streaming I am not arsed about at all, never did none of that on PS3. I'm pretty basic regarding the consoles. Just want the best games possible and graphics, and NetFlix.

I see the benefits XBox has with their party chat recently as well having been playing GTA and the voices cutting out whilst the game loads back into Freeroam etc. Glad PS4 will have that.

Last night, Mark Rubin from Infinity Ward took to twitter to answer the rumours that had recently been circling the internet.

Rubin confirmed that the Xbox One version of the game will run at 720p upscaled to 1080p, whereas the Playstation 4 version of the game will run at a native 1080p constantly.

Here's Mark Rubin, Infinity Ward Executive Producer's statement:

Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we’re native 1080p on PS4. We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction. Can’t wait for next week's launch.

For those who don't know native resolution is technically and visually superior to upscaling. With upscaling, a method used a fair amount on the Xbox 360, used to improve the overall look but remember, upscaling cannot add detail that wasn't there in the first place.
