Niall Ferguson
olice have released a video that shows three "dangerous" armed gang members firing on a patrol car as they attempted to avoid detention. The footage was released as it emerged that the number of gang members from London locked up or subjected to legal restrictions has topped 1,000. The video shows an unmarked vehicle approaching the men who are on bicycles riding through along a street in Hackney, east London. As the car approaches and pulls alongside, one of the men pulls something out of his pocket and there is a flash as the weapon discharges. Police later identified that shooter as Ricardo Miles, who, along with Adebola Alimi and Daniel Ikumelo have now all been found guilty of weapons offences. All were convicted of possessing a .45 calibre handgun with intent to endanger life and possession of a knife after a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, east London. (L to R) Ricardo Miles, Adebola Alimi and Daniel IkumeloThe footage was filmed on a CCTV camera in Clapton, at around 11.30pm on January 10, 2012. Officers monitoring the CCTV had noticed three men riding on bicycles acting suspiciously. An unmarked patrol car nearby was directed to the location and drove towards the men. All three were known gang members who were in a dispute with rivals from the area. One the night in question, officers said they were riding around with the intention of causing harm to rival gang members. Although the gun was discharged, the bullet slammed into the ground in front of the patrol car, which had just stopped when officers saw the firearm waved at them. One of the men is seen falling off his bicycle as he attempts to flee and he runs off as the others escape on their bikes. The men were charged after DNA recovered from their bicycles and a knife carried by one of the gang was attributed to both Alimi and Ikumelo. Miles, 21, of Casimir Road, Alimi, 22, of the Beechholme Estate, and Ikumelo, 21, of Kenninghall Road, all Clapton, east London, will be sentenced on July 5. Detective Inspector Neil Bradburn, from Trident North East Shootings Team, said the convictions were "the culmination of a great deal of hard work by Trident which has lead to the conviction of three dangerous offenders." He added: "More than 1,000 London gang members are now either locked up or subject to legal restrictions as a result of activity by the Met's Trident Gang Crime Command. "This investigation clearly demonstrates that tackling gang-related violence remains a key priority for The Met and we will continue to target and convict those who choose to carry weapons and cause harm in London's communities." The Metropolitan Police recently revealed that 802 gang offenders have been put in custody, 101 gang offenders are subject to ASBOs or other court orders and another 105 have been released on licence conditions. http://news.sky.com/story/1097302/gang-members-open-fire-on-police-in-hackney
