This isn't 2008 Lahi, you do realise our main CB partnership hasn't been Rio + Vidic for the last couple of seasons?

Evans has been our number #1 CB and a 2 footed ball playing CB like him alongside Shaw, Rafael and someone like De Vrij is calm. You should be more worried about your boy LMArkOvic.

Calm for what? Take it you don't want to win the league

Calm enough to battery your mum

f*ck off

Agony's had enough.

I agree Rafael need discipline he had a bad season while he was fit, like everyone else, but if you don't remember him before then boy...

Evra was panting back to counters for most of last season. His over-exuberance is real, Shaw's margin for inexperience is still an assumption.

Smalling is Smalling, he's terrible as a ball playing defender his dribbling is -1 and his passing is 2. Moyes encouraging him to go forward was stupid. His other defensive qualities are decent though, he's also a victim to inconsistency in appearances and position.

Evans biggest problem is form, his poorest performances - which have marred his reputation - have been on the return from injury. CB's work in partnership and none had consistency under Moyes. Evans playing alongside Vidic Jones Rio and Smalling each at least twice in 10 appearances (we conceded least while he was paired with Smalling).

The issue there is every season for the last few we've either had a major or minor defensive crisis.

Say we sign Hummels and he does his ACL in September, we're back to square 1.

Rafael has had some issues with injuries if he's out we play either Valencia, Jones or Smalling there?

As has already been said Evans is a good defender but for where he is right now he should be 3rd choice for Manchester United.

In a ideal world we'd sign a first choice CB, a solid LB who won't mind being on the bench from time to time. With a CB in the same boat. So Evans can play a decent amount without having to be the leader back there.

That however will impact upon Jones' and Smalling's development, something that's already taken a battering IMO.

It's natural to expect LVG to bring improvements to the the younger players but unfair to expect miracles. Maybe sending 1 of Smalling or Jones out on loan somewhere where they can play every week at CB wouldn't be a terrible idea. So they are ready to step in and replace the Experienced older CB signing in a season or two.

That's an interesting fact at the end, but it'd be interesting to see a complete breakdown of those games. I.E who we played, how many times they played together, who else played in the game etc....

Manchester United's Hummels bid isn't €20m, it's up to €40m, the full story

Posted by SPORT WITNESS on July 22, 2014 at 19:50 in Sport Witness FootballView Discussions

Spanish newspaper Sport's claims on Manchester Untied and Hummels were huge on Monday. They said the deal was almost done and that as long as there were no last minute hiccups the German defender would be announced as a Manchester United player before the end of the week,

However, they also said that Manchester United were in the process of signing Wesley Sneijder and today Sport said the Premier League club made a £28m bid on Monday for Juan Cuadrado. As part of the Hummels claim, Sport said Borussia Dortmund were happy with a fee of €20m... and Jurgen Klopp has already used that figure as an example of why the story is rubbish.

It's just too cheap.

However, Italian outlet Il Tempo claim on Tuesday that the bid for Hummels is actually between €35m and €40m, which would convert to between £27.6m and £31.6m. That seems a much more realistic price for the Dortmund defender and potential new Germany captain.

Even so it has to be incredibly unlikely that a move would happen this summer. Dortmund don't want to sell and Hummels may want to give it at least another year in the Bundesliga. He doesn't turn 26 until December and has plenty of time ahead for a move overseas, staying in the Bundesliga also won't do his chances of being new Germany captain any harm.

German newspaper Bild say the rumours are simply 'hot air' but don't underestimate Manchester United's ability to spend on transfers this summer. They also quote the defender's father, the wonderfully named Hermann Hummels, as saying "The rumours of a change for Mats are absolute nonsense."

And so, perhaps, ends the the bi-monthly 'Hummels is signing for Manchester United' rumours.

I think using Jones and Smalling as utility men has killed their development.

They can be a great partnership imo.

Bayern Munich cbs aren't exactly world class are they

Systems >>>>> relying on individual brilliance and ability

They may not have world class cb's but the rest of the team is made up of quality players like Neuer, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Ribery, Muller, Robben…...

What a stupid example  8-)

Jürgen Klopp has ruled out Manchester United signing the central defender Mats Hummels and has said that Marco Reus will not be leaving Borussia Dortmund either. The attacking midfielder has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

“I can assure everyone that there are no signs that those two players want to leave. Marco and Mats will play for us the next season,” Klopp said on the 19:09 Uhr show on Wednesday night.

He added: “What are we talking about today? Mats to Manchester United? For how much? €20m (£15.8m)? With those kind of sums can you forget that straight away.”

Rah, dons don't respect Evans nah?

Not surprised

Irl people I know don't rate Evans and smalling, only Jones

Smalling limited defender, Evans ball playing defender

Rafael and Shaw complete wing backs

Get an anchor man/half back and we are sorted

Lmao +1

Also i don't really feel comfortable with Smalling at the back, his passing just don't do it for me, first touch like Fellaini

Even though I fully understand why the tours are necessary I see where he's coming from. Was watching SSN today and they did a breakdown of the travelling distance for Prem teams during pre-season this year. I think Arsenal and Chelsea have between 3000-4000 miles vs...

With a possible total travelling distance of 13,471 miles, coast-to-coast across the United States, this summer's club tour is one of the shortest by distance for years. Last summer United covered 24,000 miles and in 2012 they cleared 22,000 miles.

It also doesn't help that this country doesn't have a winter break and it's a world cup year. Wouldn't be surprised if Mourinho took all of this into account to try to get off to a flying start this season because I swear Chelsea usually does a tour in the USA or Asia.
