I think this looks a lot better. I like the fact that you have merged the top links i.e. videos, entertainment etc to stay on the same type layout.One thing though.. outside of this box looks too big and spacious; including the top of the page. It's annoying.

That's more of a MySQL limitation rather than a software 1. All purely because even if u tweak the minimum requirements of searching to 3 char. It will throw back rubbish results. One way to try get around it would be to do it like this.
