Manchester United have failed with a bid to take Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa on trial. The 18-year-old forward has a reported price tag of around £18million and the player's agent has already admitted that he doubts whether United will come up with a big enough bid to convince Gremio to sell.United are very keen on Douglas, and have been actively tracking him for more than 12 months. The price placed on his head by Gremio has not put Sir Alex Ferguson off, but he seemingly needs convincing Douglas is worth such an outlay. The Scot wanted to see Douglas in action at United's Carrington training HQ for 20 days - but Gremio have shunned this idea, insisting he is too good for such a proposal."We have said to them [Manchester United] that this will not happen," president Duda Kroeff stated."Douglas is not at the stage where he would go through such a situation."Douglas has played less than 20 first-team games for Gremio, but he has shone for Brazil at youth level, which has seen him attract interest from almost every big club in Europe.http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5399945,00.html
Real strike Albiol dealReal Madrid have finalised a deal for Valencia defender Raul Albiol. The 23-year-old Spanish international was a reported target for Liverpool, but he now looks set to join the new Florentino Perez era at Madrid.Madrid have already splashed out more than £140million to land attacking targets Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, but new boss Manuel Pellegrini is also wanting to bolster his defensive options.Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa is high on the list, but Albiol was his first choice and a €15million deal is understood to have been agreed.Albiol is ready to finalise the move when he returns from Confederations Cup duty with Spain, when he will pen a five-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.Speaking from South Africa after Spain's shock semi-final defeat to USA, Albiol insisted that he was in the dark over the transfer."The truth is that I did not know anything because we had a game," he said."Let's see if I hear something on Thursday.http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11827_5399954,00.html

Couple of things from 'Baggie' Bill Howell's webchat today:

Bill Howell: Ashley Young happy? Yes he is. And more importantly so too is his agent who is convinced he will be at the World Cup, so I am told, if he stays at Villa Park. But.... that will all change if Chelsea come a knocking. Not the agent's stance, but possibly the player's. Then again, remember Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Bill Howell: I think Bentley will arrive. But I think he will be further down the line. I hear it is another target that is lined up.
Bill Howell: Michael Owen and Villa is not allowed in the same sentence any more.
Bill Howell: Not heard anything about Sneijder, Huntelaar and Van der Vart. The name that was given to me last night was much closer to home but equally as attractive (in footballing terms, guys)
Bill Howell: Jenas. Very good Nick W. Both him and Huddlestone are in the frame. As is Wheater. You might as well chuck in the likes of Tuncay, Wes Brown, Darren Gibson, Robbie Keane... oh and United are desperate to get rid of Nani. All of these under consideration. But there are two targets under real discussion.
