Spanish duo fire Reserves to top

Liverpool Reserves are top of the league after strikes from Suso and Daniel Pacheco secured a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Monday night.

John McMahon's team leapfrogged Sunderland at the summit of their section of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North following goals in each half.

Blackburn took the initiative in the opening minutes and it required a late intervention from Pacheco to stop No.9 Tom Hitchcock as he prepared to pull the trigger on just three minutes.

Shortly after that Pacheco was doing fine work at the other end, threading a superb pass through to Tom Ince before he was narrowly beaten to the ball by goalkeeper Jamie Kean.

From then on it was all Liverpool in the first half.

There was an element of déjà vu about our next opportunity, though this time it was a Jay Spearing sidefoot that split the defence before Ince rounded the 'keeper with a touch that proved just too heavy.

Steven Irwin then threatened by cutting in from the left and firing into the hoardings, but it wasn't long before the deadlock was broken.

The clock showed 25 minutes had been played when Spearing and Ince helped to set up Gerardo Bruna down the right-hand side. The former Real Madrid starlet laid to Suso in the box and he made no mistake in poking past Kean.

Blackburn were struggling to create anything in response, though they were presented with a good opportunity straight after the restart when Peter Gulacsi spilt a Zak Aley cross and Hitchcock appeared ready to pounce. Thankfully for McMahon's charges Emmanuel Mendy did just enough to distract the striker and his effort flew wide.

Liverpool countered with a lovely stab through the defence by Nikola Saric for Ince to run on to, but again the son-of-Paul was denied - this time by a brilliant recovering tackle from Jackson Ramm.

Blackburn were proving a more worthy opponent in the second period and it needed a block from the excellent Mendy to prevent another Hitchcock effort testing Gulacsi. Not long after that Aley came close with a header from a corner.

One noteworthy incident from a Liverpool perspective was the introduction of Conor Thomas, the England youth international on loan from Coventry, for his reserves debut.

It appeared as though his main job would be to help Liverpool withstand Blackburn's second-half resurgence but on 83 minutes Pacheco put the victory beyond doubt when he collected possession on the edge of the box before creating a yard of space to fire a classy left-foot strike beyond Kean.

Ince came close to making it 3-0 on three occasions in the closing minutes but was thwarted each time by Kean.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Tom Ince

Liverpool Reserves: Gulacsi, Flanagan, Irwin (Cooper 65), Wisdom, Mendy, Spearing (Thomas 70), Bruna, Pacheco, Saric, Suso, Ince. Subs not used: Roberts, Stephens, Sokolik.

What I'm trying to say is, Walcott has been around for 5 years and is still regarded as a youngster

And Bale has been around for 3 and he cant be regarded as one?

Wilshere has been a Prem player for 1.5 (14 apps for Bolton) years.

I get what your saying but I'm judging it mainly on age cos thats how it has worked over the years. Ashley Young got the Young Player of Year award when he was 23 and had around 3 Prem seasons under his belt. Same goes for Milner who had more than 3 seasons when he won the award last year at age of 24.
