LOME/LUANDA (Reuters) - Unknown assailants opened fire on the coach carrying Togo's national football squad to the top African tournament in Angola on Friday, killing the driver and wounding four others, a Togolese official said."The Angolan driver was killed on the spot," said a Togolese sports ministry spokesman in Lome, adding that the attack took place in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, where a separatist group has waged a three-decade long war against the government. He said the wounded included two squad members and two medics. He said some of those wounded would have to be evacuated for treatment but gave no further details of their identity or the extent of their injuries. The attack comes just two days before the start of the 2010 African Nations Cup, a pan-continental tournament which will have much of Africa glued to television and radio sets for the next three weeks.Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor was uninjured after the attack in Angola, the Premier League club said on their website (www.mcfc.co.uk).City said club officials have spoken with Adebayor and that he was unharmed, though shaken by the terrible events.Togo were due to play Ghana in a Group B tie on Monday.http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE6073VY20100108

Really got nothing to do with class. /Henry Winter has to be one of the biggest d*cks in sports journalism.

Fifa must investigate events in Angola and improve teams' safety before World Cup. S Africa are organised but nothing can be left to chance
/Good response to the shootings..http://www.just-football.com/2010/01/togo-bus-attack-in-angola-ahead-of.html
London is closer to Moscow than Luanda is to Cape Town. If a bomb goes off in Bosnia would you question the Olympics in London? One of the saddest parts of all this though, is the fact that attacks like these merely invite all the smirking and cynicism and stereotypes that were already being purported days, weeks and months ago by a press corps desperate to hammer Africa, for whatever self-serving reasons.

Well the safety of them players is important, think if it was a player or even worse the squad who was killed. Need we go back to the Olympics in '72 for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_massacre athletes taken hostage and killed.Even going from that piece posted why did they change their route from flying to driving, and not letting officials know who could've beefed up security. It is a major talking point and a shame it's already put a black mark on the competition.
