Authorities in Hull are probing claims that the body of a man who died in police custody has turned up - more than 10 years after he was thought to have been buried.

Police were accused of "unwitting racism" over the death of black ex-paratrooper Christopher Alder, 37.

His sister told the BBC the family were "shocked and appalled" at the news.

Hull City Council would not confirm the body was Mr Alder's, but said it was "appalled and distraught" by the error.

Mr Alder's sister Janet told the BBC: "I'm just in total shock, I really can not believe that after all we've been through, after all the family's been through ... there can be so much incompetence.

"It just feels like contempt. It feels like adding insult to injury when you're trying to move on with your life."

The council said the body of a man had been found in the city mortuary where it was thought a woman's body was being kept.

Mr Alder's family said they had been told they "buried the wrong body" at his funeral.

Mr Alder died in a police detention area in 1998.

Thats awful.

I saw some brief cctv the other day of the police carrying him out the cell dead.

As if the injustice of that wasn't bad enough.

And no police faced charges either.

The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, described the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, as a "liar" in a private exchange with Barack Obama at last week's G20 summit in Cannes that was inadvertently broadcast to journalists.

"I cannot stand him. He's a liar," Sarkozy told Obama. The US president responded by saying: "You're fed up with him? I have to deal with him every day."

Neither leader apparently realised that microphones that had been attached for a press conference were still switched on, allowing journalists to hear the embarrassing exchange.

The exchange was first reported on the French website Arrêt Sur Images, and was later confirmed by a Reuters reporter who also heard the remarks.

The gaffe followed a press conference after which the two presidents retired to a private room. The conversation apparently began with Obama criticising Sarkozy for not warning the US that France would vote in favour of the Palestinians' application to join Unesco, the United Nations agency for culture and education.

One French journalist told Arrêt Sur Images that the conversation was broadcast for around three minutes before officials realised the mistake. Another told the website that the reporters agreed not to publicise the remarks because of their sensitive nature.

to be fair to both presidents Netenyahu is indeed a liar and just playing delay with the peace process. nothing will be achieved whilst hes in power. i'm glad some of these leaders are aware of this. however im sure this guarantees obama will lose the support of the jewish lobbyist and financial backers.

they are all liars in the real sense. every one of them, sarkozy is as much as a daemon as netanyahu, being a fellow Joo..it was probably a snare to trap obama and hear what he thinks of him...reuters and any so called media that were present are all zionist run anyway....if there was an agreement not to publish the information then how come we're hearing about it now? all just the plan to fuck over obama...and he deserves every bit of it for surrounding himself with those uber daemonz in the first place. devilyahu will be on the phone to sarkozy saying "thanks cuz,"

Not a bad idea. I approve.

Australia passes plain-packaging cigarette law

Tobacco companies vow to challenge legislation in the high court after senate approves ban on brand logos on packets
Australia is to become the first country to enforce the plain packaging of cigarettes but tobacco companies have vowed to fight the new legislation in court.

From December next year, all cigarettes will be sold in olive green packs, which research has shown is least appealing to smokers.

Under the new laws, approved by the upper house of parliament, no trademark brand logos will be permitted on any packaging of tobacco products, although companies will be able to print their name and the cigarette brand in small, prescribed font on the packets.

The boxes will continue to carry stark health warning messages and pictures, which will cover 75% of the front of the pack and 90% of the back.

"If this legislation stops one young Australian from picking up a shiny, coloured packet and prevents them becoming addicted to cigarettes then in my view it will have been worthwhile," said John Faulkner, a Labor senator, during the parliamentary debate.

Military action against Iran could have "unintended consequences" in the region, the US defence secretary, Leon Panetta, said on Thursday, hours after Tehran warned that an attack against its nuclear sites would be met with "iron fists".

Panetta, who took over the Pentagon's top job in July, said he agreed with the assessment of his predecessor, Robert Gates, that a strike on Iran would only delay its nuclear programme, which the west believes is aimed at making an atomic bomb.

"You've got to be careful of unintended consequences here," Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon.

"It could have a serious impact in the region, and it could have a serious impact on US forces in the region," he said. "And I think all of those things, you know, need to be carefully considered."

Tension over Iran's nuclear programme has increased since Tuesday when the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Tehran appeared to have worked on designing a bomb and may still be conducting secret research to that end.

Iran has warned that it will respond to any attacks by hitting Israel and US interests in the Gulf. Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40% of all traded oil passes through.

"Our enemies, particularly the Zionist regime, America and its allies, should know that any kind of threat and attack or even thinking about any action will be firmly responded to," Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on state television.

Last week, a US military official told a forum in Washington that he saw Iran as the top threat to America and its allies in the Middle East.

He pointed to concerns over Iran's nuclear programme and also to accusations by the US that Iran plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington, an allegation Tehran has denied.

However, Panetta said military action remained a last resort in the US and Israeli view, and stressed Washington's efforts to win tougher sanctions against Tehran.

"It is important for us to make sure we apply the toughest sanctions – economic, diplomatic pressures – on Iran to change their behaviour," he said.

"And we are in discussions with our allies with regards to additional sanctions that ought to be placed on Iran."

The European Union may approve fresh sanctions against Iran within weeks, EU diplomats said on Thursday.

Russia and China have expressed concerns that attacking Iran will be a big mistake. Its peak 2012 here we come

Russia, China Warn US Against Attacking Iran

Lavrov Says Attacking Iran Would Be 'Serious Mistake'

Jason Ditz / Anti-War.com

(November 7, 2011) -- Faced with a round of threats and speculations of an impending war so shrill that it has sent oil prices soaring, Russia and China were quick today to caution the United States against launching an attack on Iran.

Attacking Iran would be a "very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences," warned Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while China expressed concern that the threats were harming the prospects of diplomacy.

They are just the latest in a growing chorus of nations to express concerns about starting another major war. Germany has also said they oppose such a move.

A growing number of US officials past and present have expressed a preference for launching a military attack on Iran soon, with an IAEA report alleging some vague allegations about computer simulations serving as the latest pretext.

Israeli officials have also been hyping the prospect of launching an attack on Iran themselves, with President Shimon Peres insisted the war was "more likely" than any sort of diplomatic solution. Israeli military officials are said to prefer an attack before winter
