Self-steering bullet researched by US weapons experts

_58201531_bullets.jpg

A self-guiding bullet that can steer itself towards its target is being developed for use by the US military.

The bullet uses tiny fins to correct the course of its flight allowing it to hit laser-illuminated targets.

It is designed to be capable of hitting objects at distances of about 2km (1.24 miles). Work on a prototype suggests that accuracy is best at longer ranges.

A think tank says the tech is well-suited to snipers, but worries about it being marketed to the public.

Work on the project is being carried out by an Albuquerque-based subsidiary of defence contractor Lockheed Martin on behalf of the US government.

The current prototype involves a 4in (10cm) bullet which includes an optical sensor in its nose to detect the laser. This information is then processed and used to move motors within the bullet which steer tiny fins, altering the ammunition's path.

"We can make corrections 30 times per second," said researcher Red Jones.

"That means we can over-correct, so we don't have to be as precise each time."

Accuracy

The team has carried out both field tests and computer simulations, and says "engineering issues" remain. However, they add that they are confident of bringing the product to market.

Experts say there would be great demand for the innovation on the battlefield.

"One of the big successes in Libya was that the accuracy of the munitions used was much higher than in previous campaigns," Elizabeth Quintana, senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute think tank told the BBC.

"97% of Nato's weapons hit their target to within about 2m (6.5ft). But that was achieved through air munitions.

"This would be a revolution for ground forces, and may help further cut down on civilian casualties in future conflicts."

Unlike most bullets the self-guided prototype minimises spin, aiming to fly like a dart.

Researchers say special gunpowder may be needed to help the bullet achieve faster speeds

Normally small calibre rifle bullets are spun at over 2,000 revolutions per second to stabilise their flightpath and maximise speed.

But the team's patent application notes that previous attempts to create self-guiding rapidly-spinning bullets ran into the problem that the electronics required became too complicated.

To simplify things the researchers moved the bullet's centre of gravity further forward than it would normally be.

When combined with the fins this caused it to only spin a few revolutions per second, making it easier to steer. Because the bullet's motion settles the longer it is in flight, the researchers say its accuracy improves at longer ranges.

Tests with commercially available gunpowder have measured the bullet reaching just over twice the speed of sound (2,400ft per second), which is still below standard military speeds.

But the researchers say they are confident that they can increase its velocity with customised gunpowder.

Terrorism

A press release said that: "Potential customers include the military, law enforcement and recreational shooters."

That concerns some industry watchers.

"The public may be uncomfortable with the implications of people being able to use this without needing to have a sight line to the target - you could see this having terrorist uses," said Ms Quintana.

"There's talk of selling to recreational hunters, but I would imagine the authorities would want to limit the public's access to this kind of technology.

"But it would be useful for law enforcement - particularly in hostage situations."

Gun fights to soon come like this

Obama tightens US sanctions on Iran

US President Barack Obama has placed stricter sanctions on Iran's government, including its central bank.

In an executive order, Mr Obama said he was freezing all Iranian government assets held or traded in the US.

On Sunday, Mr Obama said the US and Israel were "in lockstep" in their policy towards Iran.

Concerns have grown in Israel and the West that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, although Tehran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.

The new US sanctions include blocks on the Central Bank of Iran, imposed "in light of the deceptive practices" the bank to conceal transactions already banned by previous sanctions.

The curbs were also prompted by Iran's "deficient" efforts to combat money-laundering, the executive order said.

The US introduced new sanctions on Iran at the end of 2011 as part of a wide-ranging defence bill.

But the latest round of sanctions gives American institutions the powers to freeze assets related to the Central Bank of Iran, instead of just turning them back.

In a statement, the US Treasury department said the order was part of "the administration's resolve to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its failure to meet its international obligations".

Knowing who is making decisions at any given time inside of Iran is tough”

End Quote President Barack Obama

Iran "will face ever-increasing economic and diplomatic pressure" until it answers the international community's "well-founded and well-documented concerns" about its nuclear programme, the Treasury said.

Pre-emptive worries

Speaking on Sunday in an interview with NBC, the US president emphasised that Israel and the US were working in "unison" to counter Iran.

Washington had "a very good estimate" of when Iran could complete a nuclear weapon, Mr Obama said.

But knowledge of Tehran's internal decision-making was not as clear, he said.

"Do we know all of the dynamics inside of Iran? Absolutely not. Iran itself is a lot more divided now than it was. Knowing who is making decisions at any given time inside of Iran is tough.''

He stressed the US was attempting to resolve the showdown diplomatically but that the country had done extensive planning on all options.

Asked if he believed the Jewish state could launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran, Mr Obama said: "I don't think Israel has made a decision on what they need to do."

He declined to answer directly a question whether Washington would be consulted first, saying only that the US and Israel "have closer military and intelligence consultation... than we've ever had".

However, correspondents say that behind the scenes Washington is deeply alarmed by reports that Israel may strike Iran as early as April.

Reports in the US media last week suggested Israel was planning to attack Iran in the spring of 2012, prompting an ambiguous response from US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta.

"While newspapers and television talk about the lives of celebrities, the chief of the Kayapo tribe received the worst news of his life: Dilma, "The new president of Brazil, has given approval to build a huge hydroelectric plant (the third largest in the world). It is the death sentence for all the people near the river because the dam will flood 400,000 hectares of forest. More than 40,000 Indians will have to find another place to live. The natural habitat destruction, deforestation and the disappearance of many species is a fact."

What moves me in my very bowels , making me ashamed of being part of Western culture, is the reaction of the chief of the Kayapo community when he learned of the decision—his gesture of dignity and helplessness before the advance of capitalist progress, modern predatory civilization that does not respect the differences . . .

But we know that a picture is worth a thousand words, showing the reality of the true price of our bourgeois "quality of life".

14-02-2012 To All,

Thank you so much for your support and concern! I posted this picture and article as it touched me deeply, as it has so many of you. I put it on Frontier Bushcraft’s webpage as I thought this would be the only place where most people would care. I never expected so much response from people all over the world, proving to me that there is hope for the human race after all! I have since read articles stating that reason the Chief was crying is not as I previously stated, regardless of this reason the issues at hand are still true and this picture has created a lot of awareness to these issues worldwide! I am receiving updates from the Amazon watch website confirming that our comments and shares are creating quite a stir over there!

I am just a regular guy no different to the rest of you and until now have never been actively involved in anything like this before, after seeing and reading all your responses I have since signed the petition below and will continue to do all I can for these people! Now the rest of you just have to act upon your new found awareness to these issues. Please sign the petition below and join their newsletter to receive regular updates.

Protest by NoBorders at Heathrow Airport against Ghana deportation flight

Eleven people were arrested outside an immigration centre near Heathrow airport last night, during a protest calling for the abolition of all borders by a radical group.

Thirty demonstrators with NoBorders were bidding to stop a flight deporting illegal immigrants to Ghana, from Harmondsworth immigration detention centre, in West Drayton.

Arrests were made for suspected public order offences between 6pm and when the protest finished at 1.30am, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

The protest may form part of a calendar of events organised by the fringe group this month, with the aim of ending “very idea of governing people’s movement through border controls,” – according to the group’s official website.

'An English teacher has quit school for a hip-hop career after beating one of his students in a rap battle. A clip of Mark Grist's victory over 17-year-old MC Blizzard has been watched by more than 1.5 million people on YouTube. Now, Mr Grist, 30, of Peterborough, is to swap Shakespeare and Chaucer for Snoop Dog and Dr Dre. He started by using rap in class to try to get his pupils interested in poetry, reports The Sun.

"It has helped to inspire my pupils to achieve, and given them a much stronger interest in English," he said. "I've always loved poetry and my interest in rap stemmed from there. I am not a cool rapper. I'm probably the squarest one you'll meet." In the viral clip, suit-wearing Mr Grist is seen using his superior linguistic skills to demolish his teenage opponent.

'MC Blizzard taunts him with: "You k*** head, I hope you drop dead, if I punch you in the face who are you going to call? Ofsted?" But the teacher responds: "To those at home who are sitting watching YouTube don't start clicking. I know this might look like some kind of extreme babysitting. It's actually a rap battle between two grown men b***hing. Just one of us isn't legally allowed to drink inside the building. And now Bradly is going to try and act less infantile by pretending he is proper riled. So now sit back and watch him reconcile with his lack of breast feeding as a child." Mr Grist is now in a group called Dead Poets, which fuses rap music with poetry and performs at venues nationwide. He still works as a supply teacher when not on tour' -
