Van Der Saar was utterly fantastic in goal - top level goalkeeping isn't just about shot stopping

It's like a house of cards, really - you need your foundations, there is a lot more to goalkeeping than most people think, and for most people who coach it or played in the position at a high level it can be difficult

1. Handling & technique - the ability to catch the ball in the proper manner, hold onto shots, crosses, not overbalance yourself when diving, pushing shots wide of the goal when need be

2. Command of area - the ability to instruct and marshal your defence, aswell as the judging of coming for crosses, staying on your line when you need to, shouting and making it clear when you are coming to collect

3. Kicking & distribution - incredibly important for modern goalkeepers, it's not sufficient to be merely a stopper anymore, you have to be comfortable with the ball at your feet, from back-passes especially, and your distribution needs to relieve pressure from your team, not put them under it, so that means kicking from the floor from a static position and from a position of receiving a pass and hitting it first time must be on point (in the Spurs game we saw an example of when this can go wrong)

4. Concentration - probably the most important for a top level goalkeeper, this allows all of the other elements (aside form reaction saves) to come into play, and it often separates the keepers who are great, from the ones who are good

5. Shot-stopping ability - Reflexes, agility, bravery - this is fairly self explanatory, it's the easiest of all the goalkeeping traits, but can often be the most telling and eye-catching

VDS, like BUffon at a certain point in his career was as good as ANY keeper you will ever see, ever.

His technique was sublime (yes there is correct technique to catching a ball) he would hold onto every single shot that came at him no matter the weather or speed of it, his footwork was very good for a big man, his kicking (on both feet) was brilliant, no matter the pressure he was under 9/10 times he would put a perfect kick in, aerially he was flawless, a huge guy, good command of his area he plucked most balls out of the air without much if any trouble

His shot stopping was great too

The one thing that goes against him is that his agility did start to decline toward the end of his career, but then he was 40 so it's to be expected

I think if I were to advise younger players to watch a goalkeeper to master technique from, it would be VDS

Completely reliable

Courtois is easily

Easily?

De Gea is going to be the best shot stoppper in the world, couple with his ability on the ball to play it from the back don't see how you can say easily at all.

#TBT

Whats changed?

De Gea is still the best one for me, and his performances hasn't justified you acting like my statement was silly.

Bayern

22 German titles

2 Intercontential titles

4 European Cups(4 times runners up)

Yet there not bigger Man Utd

Like I said more successful/better ran club/better team

We still disagree?

Better Team - Yes

Bigger Team - Hell No

"Teach me Porchy"

They are not bigger though. Fuck is wrong with you?

How to deal with Real Madrid

"Telegraph Sport understands that Real were prepared to pay almost £37 m for Courtois, making him the most expensive goalkeeper ever. When Real inquired about Courtois, Chelsea told Real they would have to double that fee to stand any chance of signing him."

Gonna be jokes when they sign De Gea for 10m and Coentrao

How much do you think he's worth?

Anything about £25m is paying massively over the odds for him when Cech (the better more experienced keeper) is available for half.

What he is actually worth is irrelevant to Levy.

Captain, wont be able to replace him, selling domestically, long contract,

If he went for any thing less than £30m id be very surprised. (domestically)

United are so dead on the food chain they need to do to spurs/villa/everton etc... What the big clubs do to them

Cant be letting madrid take de gea and then pay more for lloris

No point going for cech tho

Lloris and make him the vice captain, despartley need a leader at the back
