Jamal Edwards now worth £8million as media mogul edges up Sunday Times Young Rich List.

 

Remember last year we told you that SB.TV founder and figurehead Jamal Edwards had appeared on the Sunday Times Rich list after his empire was valued at £6m?

Well, despite the global economic crisis and huge companies going bankrupt (even Tesco announcing their first fall in profits for 20 years), the young entrepreneur has managed to grow his business and climb up from position 42 in the annual list of Britain’s young wealthy to position 39.

 

Jamal’s SB.TV holdings are now valued at £8m.

A 23-year old who grew up on a South Acton estate and launched an online TV channel seven years ago with a video camera he got for Christmas today sold a stake that valued his company SB.TV at £8 million.

 

Jamal Edwards began by shooting short films about urban music but has used YouTube to broaden SB.TV into what he calls a “youth lifestyle broadcaster”, which has had more than 150 million views.

 

Now he has got an undisclosed investment from Miroma Ventures, a sister company of London media-barter firm Miroma, to help SB.TV push into ecommerce, events and merchandising.

 

Edwards,  who has worked with music stars Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora and brands such as Beats by Dr Dre, said SB.TV’s success came from “empowering young, hungry UK artists on their own terms”, without relying on traditional media outlets.

 

Miroma Ventures could invest a further £1 million “in the near future”.
