Swansea City revelation Michu was recommended to seven Barclays Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur TWICE, before joining the south Wales club for a bargain £2.2million in July. 

 

The Spaniard has been in remarkable form since arriving from cash-strapped Rayo Vallecano, netting 13 times to rank second in the top-flight’s scoring charts behind Manchester United’s £24m striker Robin van Persie and alongside Newcastle United’s Demba Ba and Liverpool’s £22m forward Luis Suarez.

 

But Sportsmail understands Tottenham, Fulham, Stoke, West Brom, West Ham and Aston Villa, as well as Swansea, were all told by an independent agent in Spain about the 26-year-old in the summer and encouraged to bid for a man who scored 15 La Liga goals from midfield. Championship club Leeds were also contacted.

 

 

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has since slapped a value of £30m on his star man, who last week was promised a first international cap by Spain manager Vicente del Bosque ahead of the friendly against Uruguay in Doha on February 6.

 

Tottenham were actually first notified about Michu in the summer of 2011, when his contract at Celta Vigo, then in the Spanish second tier, expired and he was available on a free transfer. 

 

At the time, Michu was largely playing a deeper, more defensive role and Tottenham snubbed the opportunity to bid.

 

They rejected a second chance to sign Michu last summer and it’s understood the error has since become a dark joke between members of the coaching staff.
