Darren Samuels, 28, slammed his girlfriend's head into a door before kicking her repeatedly as she lay on the floor while his terrified eight-year-old son shielded his baby brother. Hayley Randall, 30, was taken to hospital following the attack where doctors noticed footprints on her head. Cardiff Crown Court heard Samuels attacked Ms Randall because he had "trouble adjusting" to their new baby boy, who was just eight weeks old at the time. Prosecutor Tim Naylor told how a friend of Ms Randall's called at her home in Ely, Cardiff, to hear the noise of her baby screaming, but no one came to the door. After a short while a badly beaten Ms Randall answered and was described as "slurring her words". She told her friend she couldn't remember what had happened, apart from her boyfriend Samuels slamming her head into a door, and said her eight-year-old son was upstairs in a bedroom with his baby brother. Samuels was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court The court heard her friend called an ambulance when Ms Randall started to throw up and when she was taken to hospital doctors noticed shoe marks on her head and face. Mr Naylor said: "The marks on her face were consistent with those of footwear. "She had suffered a sustained assault which ended with a kick or a stamp to the face." Samuels was arrested and initially denied assaulting his partner, but later pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm. Meirion Davies, defending, said Samuels had a history of schizophrenia , and that strains of having a new baby were to blame for the attack. Mr Davies said: "He too has little recollection of what happened. "His baby was eight weeks old and both parents were having difficulties adjusting to the child." Judge Niclas Parry said: "This was a sickening attack on a female in her home. "We are left with an image of an eight-year-old boy shielding that baby in an upstairs bedroom."
