Gangs attacked groups of foreigners in four separate incidents on Sunday in Cologne, the city where dozens of New Year’s Eve assaults on women took place, German police have said, as the government warned against letting the incident lead to suspicion of all migrants.

Shabani, the witness spoken to by the Guardian, said she had viewed the events from the cathedral steps, having gone to the city centre to experience her first German new year, eight months after arriving as a political asylum seeker from Iran. She said she had been astounded by the police’s nonchalance. “They seemed to just let it happen,” she said. “I watched as men fired large firecrackers horizontally into the crowd and they police just stood at the side of the square with their hands on their hips”.

Describing what she called “coordination tactics” among the men, Shabani said: “I watched for some time as three men who were smartly dressed gave out instructions. One time a group of three or four males would come up to them, be given instructions and sent away into the crowd. Then another group of four or five would come up, and they’d gesticulate in various directions and send them off again.”

The men occasionally paused to take selfies on their mobiles, she said, adding that they wore “sports chic” or “the type of clothing rappers might wear – smart trainers, baseball caps”.

“It looked to me like they were clearly directing the events,” said Shabani, describing the evening as “chaotic”.

Most of the 31 people questioned so far over the New Year mayhem were in the process of seeking asylum in Germany, officials say.

Earlier, the German interior ministry said 31 people had been identified as being involved in the violence, of whom 18 were asylum seekers suspected of crimes ranging from theft to assault. None of the asylum seekers was suspected of committing sexual assaults of the kind that prompted outrage in Germany over the past week.

One of the victims – known only as Katja L – gave a chilling account of her ordeal.

She said: “When we came out of the station, we were very surprised by the group that met us there."

Katja claimed the group was "exclusively young foreign men".

She added: “We then walked through this group of men. There was an alley through [the men] which we walked through.”

The violated woman went on to describe the moment she “felt a hand on my buttocks, then on my breasts”.

She said: “I was groped everywhere. It was a nightmare. Although we shouted and beat them, the guys did not stop. I was desperate and think I was touched around 100 times in the 200 meters.

“Fortunately I wore a jacket and trousers. A skirt would probably have been torn away from me."

This is funked. How did man coordinate this shit?

A mob of up to 2,000 migrants groped and sexually assaulted more than 500 women in ‘free for all’ attacks in Cologne on New Year, police notes have revealed.

Victims described being surrounded by dozens of ‘angry’ men and violently groped – and some victims had fingers inserted into their bodies.

Police recorded one attack as, ‘Several injured women. All suffered attempts to introduce fingers in vaginas, tights.

‘All were touched on the chest and buttocks. Finger was introduced inside a victim.’

Police notes from the evening have revealed how hundreds of victims were surrounded, then attacked – many having handbags and other valuables stolen by the jeering mob.

One note says, ‘Female victim: attacked by a large group in the area of her vagina, behind and breasts. A short time later she noted the loss of her phone.’

Police said late Sunday that more than a week on from New Year’s Eve, some 516 complaints had now been lodged, including 40 percent that are related to sexual assault.

Witnesses described terrifying scenes of hundreds of women running a gauntlet of groping hands, lewd insults and robberies in the mob violence.

The scale of the Cologne assaults has shocked Germany and put a spotlight on the 1.1 million asylum seekers who arrived in the country last year.

The right result?

An aid worker caught trying to smuggle a four-year-old Afghan girl into the UK from France has avoided jail.

Father-of-four Rob Lawrie, 49, who admitted attempting to get Bahar Ahmadi - known as Bru - into Britain hidden in his van, was cleared of all charges relating to aiding illegal immigration.

The ex-soldier was handed a suspended thousand euro fine by French court for putting the girl's life in danger by failing to transport her on a child seat with a belt.

However, he will not have to pay it unless he commits another offence in France.

The European Union has urged Turkey to open its borders to thousands of Syrians fleeing an onslaught by government forces and intense Russian airstrikes.

Turkey kept its Oncupinar border crossing closed on Saturday despite a significant increase in the number of arrivals to the European gateway in the past 48 hours.

As many as 70,000 people are expected to head for the border in the coming days, said Suleyman Tapsiz, governor of Turkey’s Kilis border province. There are already between 30,000 and 35,000 displaced Syrians on the Syrian side of the border being cared for by Turkey. Aid workers said the refugees were being directed to nearby camps.

Fifteen Syrians injured in bombings near Aleppo were allowed into Turkey through the crossing late on Friday night, but the Turkish government had not directly responded to the EU’s comments on Saturday evening. “Our doors are not closed, but at the moment there is no need to host such people inside our borders,” Tapsiz said.

Although the Oncupinar crossing remained closed, the Turkish foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said after a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Amsterdam that his country would maintain its open border policy. Approximately 2.5 million Syrians are now living in Turkey.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the support being provided by the union to Turkey was aimed at guaranteeing that Ankara could protect and host all Syrians fleeing the war-torn country. On Thursday, the EU approved €3bn (£2.3bn) to help Turkey cope with the number of people.

EU foreign ministers have discussed with their counterparts from Balkan states possible ways of stemming the flow of people through the region. More than one million refugees, mostly Syrian, have arrived in the EU in the past 12 months. Most have crossed into Greece from Turkey before making their way through the Balkans to Germany and other countries such as Sweden.

Earlier this week, the EU said Greece had to re-establish full control over its border with Turkey to preserve the Schengen zone. If Greece failed to do so, Brussels could allow other member states to extend border controls for up to two years – an option officials say they want to avoid at all costs.

An estimated 850,000 people arrived in Greece last year, overwhelming its coast guard and reception facilities. Aid groups say the country is able to provide shelter for just 10,000 people – just over 1% of the total.

With Greece unable to control the influx, some EU nations are now looking to help Macedonia – which is not in the EU – stop them at its southern border before they reach the Schengen zone of border-free travel.

The Hungarian foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, said: “If Greece is not ready or able to protect the Schengen zone and doesn’t accept any assistance from the EU then we need another defence line, which is obviously Macedonia and Bulgaria.”

Hungary’s right-wing government has taken one of the hardest lines against the refugee crisis and closed the main land route for arrivals into the EU last September. The country has led calls to build a fence along Greece’s northern border in the same way it built a razor-wire barrier along its own southern frontier last year.

Austria’s foreign minister, Sebastian Kurz, said the EU did not seem to appreciate the seriousness of the situation. “I say this very clearly – if we do not manage to control the situation ... our only option will be to cooperate with Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia,” he said after the Amsterdam meeting.

Nikola Poposki, the Macedonian foreign minister who was also in Amsterdam on Saturday, said its army had been deployed to bolster border security. “They’re making sure that we have decreased the illegal crossings through our border and we’re going to continue to make these efforts,” he said.

So Russia bombing civilians forcing them in to EU then sending over KGB to start anti immigration and islam protests in europe.
