LONDON (AP)—Manchester United’s cash reserves fell by nearly 100 million pounds ($158 million) in six months partially to finance an investment in the squad that is failing to maintain the English champions’ dominance on the pitch.

The team’s cash balance dropped from 150.6 to 50.9 million pounds to Dec. 31 as a result of spending that also took in stadium improvements and a bond repurchase program.

But United exited the Champions League early and neighbor Manchester City is establishing itself as the Premier League’s new force.

However, United’s moneymaking abilities appear to be undiminished, with 175 million pounds generated in the six months to Dec. 31—up more than 10 percent on the same period a year earlier.

United’s debt was 439 million pounds, a drop from a year earlier but a six million-pound rise since Sept. 31.

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester United have announced that club revenue rose to £175million in the last six months of 2011.

The Red Devils, who are chasing a 20th top flight title this season, released their financial report for the fourth quarter of 2011 on Tuesday.

The figures showed that the club's total revenue at the end of 2011 stood at £175million, an increase of £18.5million on the figure of £156.5million, which United declared at the end of 2010.

The club have experienced increases in matchday revenue - up from £52.4million to £54.5million, media revenue - up from £53.7million to £60.9million, and commercial revenue, which has risen to £58.6million from £50.4million.

The club, who were acquired by the Glazer family in 2005, have a debt of £439million as of the end of last year, down from £508million the previous year.

Expenditure

The reason behind the decrease in the club's debt is because United have bought back some of the bonds that were sold as part of a £500million refinancing exercise at the start of 2010.

United also reported that total operating costs rose sharply from £96.9million to £110.8million.

Net player capital expenditure jumped from £11.7million £47.9million due to the summer signings of David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones and general capital expenditure rose by £10.4million, thanks partly due to the cost of refurbishment of the club's hospitality boxes at Old Trafford.

The figures show the Red Devils currently have a bank balance of £50.9million.

The club are expected to experience a decline in income over the next six months after dropping down to the Europa League from the UEFA Champions League.

MANCHESTER UNITED are to open talks with Nani over a megabucks new four-year deal — worth a whopping £130,000 a week.

The champions are ready to spend after raking in a record £175million profit in six months.

United also cut their debts in the second half of last year with the money owed to the Glazer family, under the terms of their takeover, reduced from £508m to £439m.

Portuguese winger Nani, 24, has two years to run on his current contract, worth £90,000 a week.

He is perfectly happy at Old Trafford — despite interest from Juventus and AC Milan — and there are no problems over the terms of his offer.

The £18m buy from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 took time to find his feet in England but was last term voted United's players' player of the year.

Now United will rocket him into the same pay bracket as their highest earners.SunSport revealed in November that the Old Trafford paymasters pencilled in talks for early this year.

Those discussions are set to begin over the next week to extend Nani's stay until 2016.

Boss Alex Ferguson is convinced Nani can develop into a similar player to Cristiano Ronaldo and become a Reds legend.

The mercurial star began this season in superb form and returned to the side for last week's Europa League win in Ajax after being out for nearly a month with a foot injury.

United released figures for the last six months of 2011 which show they will still be kings of Manchester off the pitch... even if their neighbours and Premier League leaders City take their title.

The £175m profit is £18.5m up on the same period in 2010, an increase of almost 12 per cent.

This season's Champions League flop means figures for the next six months are likely to be less impressive.

And while United remain England's richest club, they fell further behind Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in football's money league.

Their match-day revenue was up from £52.4m to £54.5m.

Media increased from £53.7m to £60.9m and commercial revenue from £50.4m to £58.6m.

Cute deals — like the £10m-per-year training kit sponsorship by DHL — helped the Glazers continue to exploit United's brand.

The positive figures came despite United's increased outgoings.

Signing David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones meant net spend on players soared from £11.7m in the last six months of 2010 to £47.9m in the same period last year.

United fans opposed to the Glazer family are angry so much of the club's income is spent on paying off the takeover debts.

A spokesman for the Manchester United Supporters' Trust said: "The Glazers have now spent every penny of the money received from the sale of Ronaldo, and more.

"That's now £92.8m spent on buying back their own bond debt that they loaded on to our club.

"So statements at the time that all of the Ronaldo money would be made available for reinvestment were clearly just spin.

"Since the sale of Ronaldo in 2009, net transfers have totalled just £90m while they have taken out £225m to cover debt payments and interest."

Pogba has been stalling over a new contract amid reports of interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, but Ferguson revealed that veteran defender Rio Ferdinand has stepped in to persuade the French youngster that his future lies at Old Trafford.

"Rio has become an important figure at the club. He is good with the young players," Ferguson said. "At the moment, he's working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure, but Rio is well regarded by him."

Pogba has been on the bench for United's last five games and could be thrust into action with United leading 2-0 from the first-leg.

''It is possible we could give Pogba a run-out,'' said Ferguson. ''It depends because there are a lot of players who need a game; Nani, Young, Hernandez, Cleverley, Smalling, Jones. Those players will all play tomorrow and we hope to put a sprinkling of experience amongst it.''

However, Wayne Rooney will miss the game after the striker was the only significant absentee from the open portion of training due to a throat infection. "Rooney's out for tomorrow," said Ferguson. "He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday. He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday.''

Michael Owen, though, has taken steps on the road to a first-team return by taking part in the session.

Owen has not featured for United since picking up a thigh injury in a Champions League group phase match against Otelul Galati in November, but trained alone at Carrington on Wednesday.

The forward has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but he appears to still have the resolve to get back to the highest level and is on the recovery trail following a long period of rehabilitation.

The Red Devils will be taking nothing for granted despite the 2-0 lead from last Thursday's encounter.

"The experience we had against Basel, where we were 2-0 up at half-time [and drew 3-3], that's in our memories," added Ferguson. "I don't think we'll be casual or careless about what we're trying to achieve tomorrow but it's a good lead. You can't dispute that."
