Ryan Giggs has been appointed as a player-coach at Manchester United with immediate effect, the club have confirmed.

Often linked with the United manager's job at some point in the future, the 39-year-old has been taking his coaching badges and is due to earn the Uefa Pro Licence next summer. He signed a new one-year deal in March and will combine playing with his new duties.

"It's no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career," said Giggs. "I'm really looking forward to working alongside David Moyes and the team."

Moyes said: "I'm delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player coach. His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the modern game. His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I'm sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role."

Giggs, who won a record 13th Premier League title last season, will be an invaluable aid to Moyes as he learns the ropes, with the Scot due to face the media alongside skipper Nemanja Vidic on Friday afternoon.

Having confirmed Steve Round, Chris Woods and Jimmy Lumsden were following him from Everton, concern had been expressed about the lack of United experience in Moyes' backroom team following his appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

Phil Neville's arrival at the Aon Training Complex on Thursday morning went some way to allaying those concerns.

Not disputing anything you've said as I agree tbh but what would you say the values and traditions of the club are?

To be fair, i have heard if you think Gary knows alot about ball Phillip is a next ting lol

still optimistic

we will be better prepared for games im sure of this

This is the thing, people are screwing up their faces but listen to the people who's opinions are based on experiences and they will tell you Phil Neville is going to be a very good coach. He might be unfashionable but Brian Kidd was, so was Steve Mclaren, people had to do research on Carlos at the time and even then that didn't get off to the greatest start and Rene didn't have a string of honours behind him either.

Maybe it's his face that gives people the wrong idea, but the dissatisfaction of this appointment is a bit strong from some people, still trying to get my head round the "Phil (it's the taking part that matters) Neville" comment from a while ago. The guy is a determined winner and I have no doubt that he'll be constantly putting work into becoming the best he can be.

I think some people are misconstruing these appointments - Rene was responsible for a lot of the training, Moyes and Rounds handle that - neither phil or giggsy are direct replacements, they're there to help aid the relationship between management and players primarily but their experience definitely brings value to the squad and youngers.

Well certainly knowing the importance of the history of the club, such as the busby babes & munich, also knowing that since the days of Sir Matt the club has an emphasis on bringing through youth, also the fact that the club is very much a family club close knit & also letting players old & new know that playing for manchester united you always have to give 100% and never give up until the final whistle and no matter how much trophies you win in a season you need to have the hunger and the desire to want more success.
