Arsenal Summer Transfer Window

Arsene Wenger is convinced Theo Walcott will stay at Arsenal after a heart-to-heart meeting.

The clear-the-air conversation at the training ground saw Walcott reassure Gunners manager Wenger that he does not want to leave and wants to commit himself to a new contract.

They even discussed the possibility of the England international playing through the middle more for Arsenal rather than out wide.

It has left the north Londoners now ready to shrug off any bids they receive for Walcott from Liverpool or Manchester City before Friday's transfer deadline.

They believe he will sign a five-year contract, even though terms have yet to be agreed.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate to sign the 23-year-old, but accepts he needs to sell Andy Carroll or Daniel Agger before making a bid.

Champions City may also make a last-minute bid and are prepared to throw striker Edin Dzeko into the equation, but Arsenal insist any approaches will be rejected and that the England winger will definitely still be their player on Saturday.

It appears to be a clear victory for the club's hardball tactics - as revealed by MirrorFootball - which saw Walcott and his advisors warned that they must sign or be sold.

While Walcott has not put pen to paper, there was enough evidence in his post-training chat with Wenger and chief exec Ivan Gazidis to convince them that he will stay.

Wenger went into the meeting fearful that Walcott did want to leave and asked him straight if he was looking to quit - the star insisted he has not thought about leaving.

Arsenal have offered Walcott a five year deal worth £75,000-a-week.

It is now believed they will try to sort out more endorsements and commercial spin-offs to boost the value of the deal to Walcott, who is one of English football's most marketable players.

Elsewhere, it would appear Arsenal are unlikely to make any last-minute moves for new faces.

Wenger does want another forward, a versatile defender and a goalkeeper but it is believed the chances are fading - unless "an exceptional deal" is put to him.

Theo Walcott is ready to sign a new five-year deal – after Arsenal’s enough-is-enough tactics paid off.

Arsene Wenger and the club’s hierarchy were determined not to get caught out again after the fall-out from Robin van Persie’s departure.

Gunners’ boss Wenger was in favour of getting tough with Walcott to stop him becoming the third big-name player to leave the Emirates this summer after van Persie and Alex Song.

MirrorFootball can reveal that the winger was DROPPED for Arsenal’s draw at Stoke on Sunday as a direct result of last Friday's contract talks stalling.

Walcott, 23, was left devastated by Arsenal’s tough stance and insiders say he was left walking round the training ground “with his chin on the floor” after it became apparent there was a major problem following negotiations.

Arsenal warned his advisers that they would sell him before the transfer window shut rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

They also warned that it could impact on him if he stayed and did not sign because being left out at Stoke was a clear indication that Wenger was going to get tough and start leaving him out.

When it actually came to Walcott’s Wednesday heart-to-heart, it is believed his manager was rather taken aback with the winger’s insistence that he actually never wanted to leave.

The player made it clear that he loves Arsenal, wants to sign a new deal and told him: “I’ve never said that I wanted to leave.”

Wenger, it would appear, had been left confused by the contract stand-off.

But Walcott insisted he just wants the right deal for his future as he turns 24 next summer and he is entering the peak years of his career.

Arsenal have offered him £75,000-a-week but he could earn more elsewhere as a regular starter for club and country and negotiations are now likely to be ongoing for the next few weeks.

But it is clear that the club will no longer force the issue with Walcott because they are convinced he wants to stay and will reject any last-minute approaches from Manchester City or Liverpool.

City football administrator Brian Marwood has been chasing him, while Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is also desperate to sign Walcott – and still believed on Wednesday that he could get his man.

But that now looks to be a lost cause, especially as there would be doubts over whether Walcott would go to Anfield while City at least could offer a bigger contract and major chances to win trophies.

But he is happy with his life in London, told Wenger how much he loves Arsenal.

And was also given the carrot of playing through the middle in his preferred role as a striker rather than a winger.

Walcott has made no secret of his desire to play as a centre forward and Wenger made encouraging noises about giving him a chance.

After a weekend in which Walcott’s world nearly fell apart as he was dropped, was left uncertain on his future and was warned he could be sold, it was the perfect tonic.

Wenger told him he is central to his plans and, after frosty negotiations over a contract, the manager and the player are definitely back on-side.

That is in stark contrast to Arsenal’s difficult negotiations with van Persie after the Dutchman made it clear in May he wanted to quit, questioned the club’s ambition a few weeks later and was then sold.

Arsenal had to cash in on van Persie rather than risk losing him for next summer and that prospect was the danger for Walcott.

On the back of selling last season’s top scorer in van Persie, and their top assists man in Song, selling an England star would have been another devastating blow and would have raised question marks among the club’s fans.

While some supporters question Walcott’s ability, his value to the team and appreciation from his team-mates is not in doubt.

And keeping him at Arsenal is a major victory for Wenger and the club’s attempt to get tough to try and regain some authority after player-power threatened to take over at the Emirates.

Have you guys seen the picture of arsenal.com selling "cabaye 17" shirts?

cabaye.jpg

Is this proof that Yohan Cabaye has left Newcastle for Arsenal or just the work of cheeky internet pranksters? The picture - purportedly of the online Arsenal shop - is doing the rounds on the internet and has been gobbled up by Gooners hungry for a big signing. Last week Real Madrid jumped the gun by profiling Luka Modric on their official website, before he joined for real (no pun intended) - have Arsenal done the same or is this false hope for their loyal fans?

I checked the store a few minutes ago and it looked to have been removed. Either they realised and took it down or it probably was some sort of photoshop. Only 48 hours to go till we find out I guess. (secretly hoping its true though)
