EuroMillions winners flee to Spain as the begging letters pour in asking for cut of £161m fortune

Britain's biggest-ever lottery winners face being hounded out of their own home by hundreds of people begging them for cash. Colin and Christine Weir are believed to have fled to Spain after winning £161 million in last Tuesday's Euromillions. Begging letters have already started pouring through the letterbox of their modest £180,000 three-bedroom home in Largs, Ayrshire.

And hundreds more are being stockpiled at the coastal town's sorting office following their unexpected public announcement of the colossal win this week. The couple have now gone into hiding with sources saying Colin, 64, and Chris, 55, have flown to Spain, with their children Jamie, 22, and Carly, 24. Their postman revealed: 'The begging letters have already started coming. I delivered a pile of them today. 'But there are many more piled up at the sorting office. They are just addressed to "The Weirs" and the manager is deciding whether to deliver them.'

Police and officials from Camelot's management team have been put on heightened alert to protect the couple from adverse attention.

Yesterday their quiet residential cul-de-sac was being discreetly patrolled by a Strathclyde Police van.

One neighbour, David Simpson, said: 'It's hard to imagine they'll be able to stay here now everyone knows they've got £161million in the bank. They will be pestered to death. 'No one would have known if they'd kept it quiet. Why let the cat out of the bag? Neighbours described their only hobby as ‘takeaways’ with their favourite being the town’s Fish and Chicken Bar. One worker there said: ‘They come in here three times a week. They always have fish and chips and either a bottle of Coke or Irn Bru. But they have never ordered a battered Mars bar.’
