A BRISTOL woman who invested her life savings in a painting by disgraced celebrity Rolf Harris says she fears it has been devalued by up to 90 per cent.

 

Sarah Gardiner, 35, bought Horses at the Lights months before the star was arrested to provide some financial security when she retired.

 

Harris was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison today after he was found guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault.

 

It emerged after the trial that the TV presenter had also viewed images of child porn on his computer.

 

The 84-year-old had been due to stand trial for the offences at a future date. But at his sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it no longer intended to proceed with the case.

 

After Harris was asked to paint the Queen it was expected his works would become even more valuable.

 

But months later Harris, 84, was arrested for a string of indecent assault charges against young women.

 

On Monday he was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault.

 

Sara, who lives with partner Mark and their baby daughter Lucy, said: “I’m sick that I bought the work of such an evil man and gutted that it’s now not going to be worth the canvas it’s painted on.”

 

Auctioneer and TV expert Mark Stacey conceded that selling a Harris painting would be “very difficult.”

 

He added: “It was not unheard of for a good Rolf Harris painting to make £20-£30,000 or more. You’d be lucky if you got 10 per cent of that now.”

 

The 84-year-old was this afternoon unanimously convicted of attacks on four victims between 1968 and 1986.

 

One of the alleged victims was a childhood friend of his daughter, Bindi. Another was aged seven or eight.

 

Harris performed his first concert after being arrested over the claims last May at the Hippodrome, where he received multiple standing ovations and thanked fans for the continual support.

 

A jury of six men and six women at Southwark Crown Court deliberated the case for more than 33 hours before reaching the unanimous verdicts.

 

The convictions have been a remarkable fall from grace for a man who was universally loved by the public.

 

As well as presenting TV shows and painting pictures he became friendly with the Royal Family.

 

He appeared at Glastonbury Festival on several occasions and was a massive hit with the crowd.

 

Mr Justice Sweeney told Harris he will serve half the total jail sentence with some of the individual sentences to be served consecutively and others concurrently.

 

The judge said to Harris: "You showed no remorse. You took advantage of the trust placed in you through celebrity status … You clearly got a thrill from committing offences while others were nearby. You have shown no remorse at all."
