You saw it in the World Cup, you see it in the EL and CL. How long did it take the National Team to drop 442? If you don't think the bottom up effect of tv presenters, news papers, football journalists, Sunday league managers, children's parents and the way they think or view football doesn't have an effect on the game then you are clueless. We are a country who still values engine and running around like a headless chicken looking passionate over positioning and anticipation. Look at the way Ozil is viewed by English fans and pundits, the same with Berbatov and others. People called for Rooney to start over Mata as a 10 because he runs around more. That is a mentality ingrained into the majority of English fans psyche. How are we going to catch up and improve our game when attitudes like that are still prominent. Gary Neville on a Monday night is the best we get on TV when it comes to talking tactics. The average fan here focuses on the end result. The average fan from other nations focuses on the result too, but has more interest in the process & the manner in which the result is achieved. Michel Kane Posted March 21, 2015 Report Share Posted March 21, 2015 Conclusions This work studied the aspects that coaches considered more important when describing the English Premier League, Spain´s La Liga and Italy`s Serie A. Our project focused on Barcelona, Inter Milan and Manchester United, winners of their respective leagues in the sporting season prior to the interviews, providing novel data for the understanding of the factors influencing a team’s playing style. We found that the coaches views go far beyond issues related exclusively to tactical, strategic or technical aspects; i.e. they are strongly influenced by cultural aspects. Our coaches believe that what distinguishes the football played in the different leagues is essentially due to cultural aspects (history and people’s culture) and strategic-tactical factors. However, they also emphasized the importance of the individual skills present in some of the players. They considered that English football possesses a much more direct style and privileges its "pure" side, while the Italian football continues to be characterized by their tactical defensive rigor. In contrast, the Spanish football is located between the two, favoring both the aesthetic side of the game and a very strong ball control. In addition, they consider that the ease with which coaches and players nowadays get hired is also a crucial factor that was not present a few decades ago. Regarding the 3 studied teams these coaches feel that what differentiates them are aspects related to a culture of play/identity specific to each team. This is seen in a context that takes into account the clubs’ history, which in turn is influenced by factors like politics, culture and the players and coaches who have been part of the club. Finally, they also referred to the strategic and tactical aspects, the players’ skills and the coach's philosophy as aspects that also contribute to differentiating these teams. This study used eight professional football Portuguese coaches and therefore, the ability with which one can extend these results must be done with care. It would be important to find out what coaches from other nationalities have to say in this respect and then compare the data. In addition, exploring this theme using athletes and directors’ views will certainly add valuable information into the understanding of the playing style phenomenon. Understanding the factors that contribute to the different playing styles in different countries and teams may provide useful information for coaches who want to more efficiently adapt to their new cultures and implement their playing philosophy. Problem with this issue is it has to be tackled on a number of fronts. You can't just rely on being more restrictive with the non-EU players coming into English football. England have 3 different cl winners while spain have 2. Make no mistake about it the pl is behind especially when it comes to technical ability but the gap isnt as big as people make it out to be. The p.l isnt far off. Remember football works in cycles. Madrid have been to 1 final in 12 years and barca never won a single c.l trophy until like 20 years ago. Even liverpool got more than them.
