Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to Gary Neville after the Manchester United defender announced his retirement from football.

The 35-year-old right back called time on a hugely-successful career on Wednesday having made 602 appearances for his club and 85 for his country.

Neville was part of a 'golden generation' at Old Trafford, winning a stack of medals alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. Wenger believes Neville lacked their natural talent but made up for it with other qualities.

"A huge career and fantastic achievements, that is what he has done," said the Arsenal manager.

"I respect a lot what he has done because he was certainly not one of the most talented players in the league but what he has achieved is consistency.

"His record is down to intelligence and motivation - he is an example to players who are maybe less gifted than the Giggs and the Beckhams but still make a fantastic career because they are intelligent and highly-motivated. They deserve a great credit.

"[Neville was the] best English right back, certainly - if you look at his record, he has won absolutely everything and the number of games he has played, he is without a doubt the best."

Wenger loves to make compliments with pars.

It is not a story that will appeal to believers of old-fashioned sportsmanship but, equally, it should not surprise any students of Mancunian-Liverpudlian sporting enmity given that the current captain of Manchester United once publicly declared: "I can't stand Liverpool, I can't stand Liverpool people, I can't stand anything to do with them." Gary Neville, the type of man who probably has "Glory Glory Man Utd" as his ringtone, has never made any apologies for putting scousers at the top of his wish-list for Room 101. Never one to hold back with his opinions, he is so flagrantly anti-Liverpool that his father, Neville Neville, interrupted one of his rants a few years ago to switch off the interviewer's tape-recorder, apparently fearful that his son was talking himself into trouble. Neville Jr is said to have responded: "But I do hate them, Dad."

Fam he said similar comments on Paul Scholes and the media made a big deal out of it.

No doubt they will tomorrrow on this too, and if they dont it surely will be cos its Gary Neville (not very liked)...

bullshit, oliver kay caused a bigger storm on twitter

said this at first

"Micah Richards and Glen Johnson are far more gifted than Neville ever was, but Neville's attitude made him a far better player. Overachiever."

then from complaints he said from thousands of tweeters, said

There was, it is fair to say, a lively response last night when, in tribute to Gary Neville, I called him "one of world football's great overachievers", adding "If that sounds like damning with faint praise, it really isn't."

And it isn't. It's an enormous tribute to a guy who, as a good friend of his reminded me this morning, started out as a midfielder and realised in the company of Scholes, Beckham and others that he wasn't good enough to play there. He moved to centre-back and was told he wasn't tall enough to play there. He moved to right-back and found himself up against John O'Kane, who was quicker, stronger and, as he saw it, more gifted.

I suggested last night that Glen Johnson and Micah Richards were "more gifted than Neville ever was, but Neville's attitude made him a far better player." That went down pretty well ... My point is that Johnson and Richards, like O'Kane, were born with the technical/physical gifts to play at the highest level and are falling short, i.e. underachieving. To my mind -- and his own -- Neville wasn't born with those gifts, so he had to work harder, in my view, than any other modern English footballer to achieve what he has done. To me, that constitutes overachievement.

People cited Neville's world-class crossing as an example of what a STUPID C*** I must be. Sorry, but that too was the product of hard work. Watching Neville in the 90s, he was never anything like as good a crosser as he became. By his own admission, that is something that he had to develop later in his career because there was a trend towards more attacking right-backs. You might not believe this, but a link with Hatem Trabelsi (he who bombed at Man City) was what taught him he had to work relentlessly on his crossing. Over time, he became an extremely good crosser, but it was not because it was something at which he was gifted.

Neville's gifts were his intelligence, his desire and his work ethic. They gave him the attitude to identify his limitations and work endlessly to improve in area he could. He couldn't make himself taller or quicker, so he worked on his stamina and his upper-body strength. He even, as Lee Sharpe said a little scoffingly in his autobiography, practised his throw-ins.

Neville did not set out to be a top-class full-back. Who does? He felt that, because of his limitations, it was the only position in which he could try to carve out a career at United, the only club he ever wanted to play for. He could have stayed in central defence or in midfield, but not at United. And he certainly wouldn't have 85 caps -- it would have been far more but for injury -- as a midfielder (though I fancy he would have had more chance than most English players of developing the skils to play in the holding role that is now en vogue).

There is an art to great defending, but to a large extent the required skills -- positioning, marking, tackling -- are either self-taught or coached. You might say it is the same of every position. I would disagree; Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were born with the technical ability and creative flair to excel in what they do.

Those areas -- intelligence, positioning, marking, tackling -- are the ones in which Johnson and Richards remain hopeless, which is why I said (and many people ignored) that, despite their gifts, they are far inferior players to Neville. A more interesting case to monitor is Rafael. He has far more of the raw physical/technical materials than Neville. Time will tell whether he can be anything like as good a full-back.

Is overachiever an insult? Did people think that, because we're talking about a team sport, I was calling him a useless player who won medals because he played in a brilliant team? That is not how he sees the term "overachiever". Nor is it how the word is seen by Frank Lampard, another who has worked phenomenally hard to elevate himself to the top echelons of the game.

As Lampard put it when I interview him a few months ago, "When I was 15, I was decent, but I was a bit chubby. There were better players than me in West Ham’s youth team. There was a boy, Michael Black, who played in my Sunday team. He was the bee’s knees. He didn’t quite kick on. There was Lee Hodges, who was at West Ham and is still a good friend of mine. He got injuries that halted his progress. But there are countless ones I could name just from my Sunday and school teams and I always felt that I had to find a way to be better than them."

That could easily be Neville talking. In fact, in an interview with The Times over a decade ago, Neville said: "When I was 14, I was average among players. was just a sub for my county team, Greater Manchester. Nicky Butt, my brother, Phil, David Beckham, John O'Kane, Keith Gillespie and Ben Thornley were all playing for national teams. They were the stars. They were playing for their country at schoolboy level and I thought they were the bee's knees. I was nothing like that and I realised when I was 16 that if I did not give it my all, then I wouldn't have a chance."

That is the point. Gillespie, Thornley and O'Kane underachieved in their careers. Nicky Butt and Phil Neville achieved. Giggs and Scholes became the world-class players they were always destined to be. Beckham? That's another debate entirely ...

And Gary Neville? A fantastic overachiever. An average midfielder who became a too-small central defender who, over time, became a top-class full-back. Not through innate talent, but through the attitude, desire and hard work which, ultimately, made him a far more talented player than he could ever have imagined in his teens. That has been a common theme in the tributes from Sir Alex Ferguson, Steve Bruce, Arsene Wenger and many others. As well as that, it is how he regards himself.[/u]

Congratulations, Gary Neville, on a great career. You were a world-class overachiever, an example to young footballers everywhere.

hardly a par

fantastic player in his time and an instrumental reliable player before the injuries wrecked him, fully expect him aswell as Giggs to join the set-up in some capacity.

One of the few United Players to actually come out and comment regarding FC United and fans protests,

Why is he so loyal?

Jamie Carragher has hailed his old rival Gary Neville as the greatest full-back the Premier League has ever seen.

The pair have clashed repeatedly over the years but the Liverpool star has paid tribute to Neville after he announced his retirement from the game.

Carragher, who played alongside the Manchester United star for England, told Drive Time: “For me he’s the best full-back the Premier League’s had. And also just behind David Beckham probably one of the best crossers of the ball we’ve seen.

For me he’s the best full-back the Premier League’s had.

“People always talk about the rivalry between Liverpool and Man United and of course it exists. We want to beat them and they want to beat us but I have great respect for Man United as a club and I hope that’s vice versa.

“Were two of the most successful teams, two of the biggest teams in the world, and for me Gary Neville’s been one of the main reasons why that’s happened.

“A great player, great pro and to play at that level for so long is a fantastic achievement so I take my hat off to him.”

Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger: Gary Neville 'Without A Doubt' The Best Right-Back Of The Premier League Era

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised Gary Neville and called him the best English right-back in Premier League history.

Neville retired from football on Wednesday after struggling to make an impact on the Manchester United first team this year but bows out as one of the most decorated players in English football.

Neville's passion for United often crept over the line of decency for many, with opposition fans viewing him as was one of the most hated footballers in the Premier League.

And he had numerous encounters with Arsenal, including a tunnel bust-up with Patrick Vieira, but that didn’t stop Wenger praising the 35-year-old.

"Best English right-back in the Premier League? Certainly," the Arsenal boss told reporters.

"If you look at his record, he has won absolutely everything and with the number of games he has played, he is without a doubt the best."

Wenger went on to praise the determination of the right-back, saying that it was his mentality that made him such an asset for United over the years.

"I respect what he has done a lot because he was certainly not one of the most talented players in the league," added Wenger.

"But what he has achieved is consistency.

"His record is down to intelligence and motivation - he is an example to players who are maybe less gifted than the Ryan Giggses or the David Beckhams.

"He still make a fantastic career because he is intelligent and highly motivated. He deserves great credit."

Neville 19-year career took in eight Premier league titles, two Champions League medals and 85 England caps.

lol Darkman gives me jokes, I know exactly what he's getting at though and it's a very valid point.

You learn nothing about loyalty when everything is good, hard times are when you will see examples of loyalty and nobody can tell me that throughout his career Neville has endured periods where from a competitive point of view anywhere looked more attractive than where he was.

He's a c*nt but if he played for my team...

Gibson is the least of our problems

our midfield is devoid of any real quality and has been for the best part of 3 seasons

you'd think with the money we got for Ronnie we got out and get it sorted but no, SAF is "happy with what i got" ridiculous tbh

im not Berbs biggest fan but he must have been gutted to come off instead of Rooney, he was SHOCKING today

for someone that came out and openly questioned where we were going as a club, did a u-turn and signed a new deal on MORE money, to turn out performances like that is baffling

i reckon he'll jog us on in the summer

p.s. its gonna be a long month or so for us. our next 5 games are tough as :(

On this form, and everything considered, I.E city probably not wanting him, and us not wanting to do business with them, and Chelsea just signing another striker,

And Rooney aint going Real Or Barca,

who would he leave us to go to?

i rate Cleverly and Welbeck highly, but if their returns are earmarked as the reasons we dont make a significant signing in the pre-season i'll be pissed but not suprised

the Ronaldo money. Lol at thinking that was given to Fergie,

our transfer funds we now have have only been there since the Bond thing last Jan,

Only SAF's stubburness is stopping us doing anything constructive in the transfer market.

(Just to clarify this is in no way a sly dig at either Hernandez or Smalling who will turn out to be very worthwhile players,

(however is a sly dig at the 7.5 mill we spent on Bebe, when in the same transfer window Van Der Vart went for how much to with all due respect a smaller team)

If anyone here genuinely believes as senile as he is, Fergie thinks Gibson is a better option than some of the younger more gifted and most importantly gettable players around the world, they are deluding themselves,

the mans stubburness is something that has been both a positive at times and a neative during his reign,

the lack off options on the bench today wouldve been shocking if it hadn't been the case since last season. its a joke, and we're meant to be planning a serious assault on the CL when that returns,

LOL someone should send Mr Ferguson a video of The way Barca are oing bout their business and tell him if he wants another treble he shouldve taken the league cup more seriously,

the fact that we'll win the league this season in my oppinion i down to the ineptness of those around us,

thats what annoys me most about this whole Glazer debacle

SAF knows we have no money, the board knows, we know, yet he still comes out and says "theres money there, i choose not to spend.....theres no value"

im of the thinking more fans would have backed SAF and the team if he just came out and said it as it is instead of pretending (lying)

i honestly have doubts that SAF will blood through these kids

they should be in and around the first team squad now, not out on loan, especially when you look at what we have and the form of some of the senior players

carrick for instance has been sh*t for the best part of 2 seasons but theres no-one challenging him for his place? its just rotation? words escape me

we're top and only lost once? this league is a joke tbh

When the takeover went through, Andy Walsh who is now the president FC United said not to take anything SAF says at face value untill he retires and releases a book,

as he has since the Martin Edwards days been submissive to whoever is in charge of the club, then afterwards comes out and says what he really thinks,

and thats what ive been doing for the most part since 2005

however crtain things in my mind have dug him a grave,

the whole tellin the fans to ditch the green and gold thing before the season, and show a "United front"

alot of the fans get onto Gill about lies and what not. but tbh i expect that from him and couldnt be bothered what he says anyway, i didnt have posters of him on my wall.

SAF and his lies have been disgracefull as with his position you'd expect him to have more of a backbone
