The Scotland captain was stunned yesterday when it was confirmed that Sir Alex was stepping down as boss at Old Trafford after 26 years at the top.

 

Fletcher, now 29, has been guided by the legendary manager since he first trained with United as a 12-year-old kid.

 

But in the last two years during his ongoing battle with ulcerative colitis, Fletcher has grown to admire Ferguson’s human qualities as much as his managerial skills which led to the capture of 38 trophies including two Champions League titles.

Fletcher said: “Through illness and injury Sir Alex has been more than just a manager to me. The human side of his character in the last couple of years has really been appreciated by myself and my family.

 

“Of course he’s driven by football, but he’s always been there for me when I needed guidance and advice.

 

“He made it clear to me that nothing is as important as your health and he made me realise that I had to prioritise myself and my family.

 

“He’s had to deal with almost every possible situation that can affect a player and in my case he’s been incredibly understanding, compassionate and supportive.

 

“I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be helping me through my illness and I will always be enormously grateful for all the help and care he’s shown. I’m desperate to pay him back.

 

“Hopefully, as things progress and I get back playing again for United that will allow me to show my gratitude for everything he has done and the support he has given.”
