Carrick as a CM in a 4-3-3? Nah...

Why not? Football isn't as black and white as some of you seem to think.

he doesnt have the legs/engine or the flair/trickery to play that position

would have to be the deeper player

the 2 central midfielders have to be comfortable going wide and getting beyond the striker when attacking..... he could do the defensive capabilities of that position no problem

Irony is, putting Carrick in that position was done in a black & white manner i.e. "Carrick is a CM, it's straightforward, he can play there..."

The role of a CM in a 4-2-3-1 & a 4-3-3 is subject to a subtle change. He goes from operating in deep central areas predominately to occupying advanced central areas. Main reason is, he has to support the lone striker. He has to have great close control, great off the ball movement (in an offensive sense) & be capable of driving forward.

Now, I think if we're talking about these specific skills, at BEST, Carrick is competent. In a 4-3-3, Cleverley, Anderson, shit even Giggs are more suited to the role. Whether at West Ham, Spurs or United, he's never operated as one of the advanced CM's. And he hasn't demonstrated the quality to operate there at an elite & consistent level.

I think the closest thing you could compare it too, is the United team between '06-'09 where you'd use a 3-man midfield in Europe of Carrick/Anderson/Scholes or Carrick/Scholes with Hargreaves playing as a very narrow wide midfielder. Even then, Carrick always operated as a deep-lying CM.

So speaking myself, it isn't a case of seeing things in a black or white way. It's just looking at Carrick's strengths, what he's demonstrated in the past & what the 4-3-3 requires of a CM. Carrick just isn't that guy.

A deep mid needs needs legs/engine more than a centre mid. A further advanced Carrick would have composure and the eye to thread killer passes in the final third. Suppose we had a proper enforcer playing DM you would definitely be able to see he creative attack part of Carrick's game.

carrick is an outlet, if moved forward he would have less time, less space and less of the ball....

still dont get why united need an enforcer

they are never really under the kosh even when playing 442 with 2 wide wingers and having spaces you can fit africa through the gaps between the 4 midfielders

i tell you guys who is probably available, wouldnt cost too much and would be a huge upgrade on jones for when an engine/runner is needed espesh in europe

Khedira, would be a good replacement for fletcher.... and i dont even rate him but for what united are looking for(even if they dont know it) he is the right fit

carrick has a great engine, he probably covers the most ground in a united jersey, a DM will free carrick and let him focus on one aspect, which is building uniteds attackin play, all he needs is a good enough partner, cleverley and anderson dont cut it, its sad because the one thing anderson does better than the rest of uniteds midfielders(including carrick) is dribble(attack space)...
