The Official Manchester United Thread

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted "changes will have to be made" at the Old Trafford outfit.
Although he inherited a squad that won the Premier League title by 11 points last season, many felt the manner of that success masked some clear deficiencies.
They were underlined by Sunday's 4-1 hammering at Manchester City, which puts a whole new perspective on tonight's Capital One Cup tie with Liverpool, featuring the return of Luis Suarez.
But Moyes feels the pain may not be over just yet.
"It was always going to be tough following such a great manager with a great team and I think people with real football knowledge will know there are probably some changes to be made," he said.
"It is not going to be made in one fell swoop. It is going to be done in time.
"Maybe we've got work to do to bring in players not for the squad but to go right into the team." - Moyes
"That is why the Manchester United board realised the job that needed to be done was a long-term one.
"There was always going to be days like this and there might well be more days like this."
That Moyes dispatched coaches Nicky Butt and Phil Neville to Spain at the weekend to run the rule over Espanyol defender Hector Moreno and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera underlined the changes that need to be made.
"I don't think it's actually the squad, I think we've got numbers," said Moyes.
"Maybe we've got work to do to bring in players not for the squad but to go right into the team.
"That will happen. But going back to that transfer window, we always said it was going to be a tough one and it was going to take a little bit more time."
It was said to Moyes at various stages of the summer that nothing could quite prepare him for life at United.
That has been brought into sharp focus by the reaction to Sunday's defeat, that has swung sharply between understanding and sympathy to outright hostility.
"I thought I was (prepared) but obviously when you come here then I realise maybe it wasn't," said Moyes.
"It is a club on its own. It is a fantastic place to work with great players.
"But we have to do well enough to make sure people on the outside think the work we are doing is the right stuff."

Moyes is a sideman with a defeatist attitude.

But that's what you get for choosing a manager based on a popularity contest(Fergie and the media's favourite choice. The same media that said he's the perfect guy for the job then wrote off our title chances as soon as he signed, lol) instead of it being based on the managerial ability and achievements.

And I can't really take that 'people with real football knowledge' talk from him seriously when he's making schoolboy errors like playing Ashley Young.

Moyes should've been backed fully in the summer. Even if it meant over paying for certain players. I think Fellani was on Moyes' list but I don't think he was a first choice target.

He's 100% correct the first 11 is not up to the standard it should be. Fergie being Fergie got this squad to perform above their level last season (aided) by shambolic City and Chelsea being in dissaray.

I stated in the othe thread that City spent 102million on improve what was already a very good side. Minus another quality CB. United were going through more upheaval and a bigger change during the summer but conducted business as if it was scripted in the style of a carry on film.

I'll pose the question again, is it just sheer coincidence that two people (Fergie & Gill) who "have always done what is best for the club have decided to step down at the same time, or is there more to it than that?

you're looking too much into it

imo fergie was going to retire 11/12 season but city winning the league made him stay 1 more year.

In a nutshell.

To the people calling it honesty, he's lowering expectations which is something he is an expert at.

Ask Everton fans how he fared when there was a level of expectation and he couldn't play the underdog card, he's not built for being at a club like Manchester United one bit.

Thiago wanted assurances of playing time which we weren't willing to give. (Rightly so)

Then Pep comes in for him, no brainer.

We then decide to go in for Fabregas after Batca had already list Thiago, we decide to bid £25 million as a starting point which was odd, regardless of any of that Fabregas was only courting the interest through his agent to strengthen his position at Barca.

Going in for a few players during the last few days of the transfer window was a joke. Acting like the transfer window doesn't offer teams adequate time to pursue and secure targets.

Neville said last season that you can always tell who the best run clubs are as they're the ones not running around trying to get things done on deadline day as a matter of urgency. I'd agree with that.

On Fergie and Gill getting out of dodge if this was something that I thought up this summer then fair enough. However I was told by somebody that they'd both leave at the same time not long after the takeover. Moreover, if Gill, or Fergie wasn't in the plans of the Glazer family post takeover the other would've walked in response.

Sort of explains the identical contradictory nature of their attitudes to the takeover before and after it was completed.

They helped each other through tough times and neither fancied relying on someone else to do the job with.

God damn.

Worrying times ahead, people gone learn about Fergies influence if they haven't already.

Tbf there were enough players to get a result against City imo, just very poor team selection.

The 1st 11 ain't the best on paper but there is still enough there with the experience to not look as bad as that, it's a fucking shambles.

Fellaini don't look like no Manchester United player to me but it's early days, him and Moyes will need a chance.

Him not winning any top games let alone trophies at Everton (despite lesser teams doing both) does indicate a weak mentality, he ain't no Ferguson that's for sure, who took Aberdeen to the title (1st for 15 years aside the usual 2) and European success over Real Madrid.

Maybe Fergie was securing his legacy by appointing Moyes but maybe that's a bit too cynical.

This does feel familiar though, I think many of you are gonna cry the type of tears I used to cry in the late 80's over United tbf.

Fergie had an excuse because he was truly rebuilding, Moyes doesn't need to do anything even remotely similar.

Should of just gave Rene the job to see if he could continue the success.

!

/ werent fergs at one point pushing for carlos quieroz to take the helm

Steve Mcclaren,

Carlos

David Moyes.

All of these have been earmarked for the job by Fergie in the past,

With all due respect there must be a reason why he didn't highlight Rene as a possible successor. Maybe he see's too much of a Brian Kidd in him or maybe there's other things.

I wanna wait and see what tonights lineups are before I get negative on the prediction. Although I had an Accu on this weekend which only needed United to win and we got hammered by City, and I now have a small double on where Leyton Orient won and I just need United tonight. Will be pissed if we lose again.

Can't see them line ups(I'm guessing)

On my phone just get an X

But to me playing a strong side and winning is just as bad as playing a fringe/young side and losing for moyes

Mentally

In the grand scheme of things it might not matter tho, if they play a strong side tonight and win the cup

God help him if he goes strong and loses

Can defo see some scapegoats tonight from the fringe lads

Tell you that himself did he? Am I'm sure he's likely to get more playing time at Bayern than Man U

:/

How do you think players generally learn of interest in them?
