Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Patrice Evra will be fit to tackle Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday.

The Manchester United manager had been sweating over the fitness of the trio as they prepare to tackle the Gunners.

England captain Ferdinand limped out of the 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw with Valencia on Tuesday night in the early stages of the second half with a tight hamstring.

Ferguson admitted after the match that his withdrawal had been precautionary and it now appears the centre-back will be fit to partner Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the defence.

Massive game

Veteran midfielder Scholes was expected to miss out against Arsene Wenger's men as he has been struggling with the groin injury he suffered against Rangers a fortnight ago.

But the talented former England international has made good progress in recent days and could take his place in the squad on Monday evening.

Experienced France left-back Evra missed the Valencia game in midweek but is expected to replace Fabio in Ferguson's backline.

Ferguson said: "We're quite confident that everyone will be fit and it's good to have everyone available for such a massive game.

"Paul Scholes started training yesterday. It was just light stuff but hopefully he will be available for Monday and Rio should be fit as well."

Virus

United are looking to maintain a five-match unbeaten run against the Gunners and leap back to the Premier League summit.

Defensive duo Jonny Evans and Wes Brown had also been struggling with a virus but they are also in contention.

"Jonny and Wes have had a bit of a virus that has been going around the place," added Ferguson.

"We should have a full squad for Monday."

Ferguson also confirmed Michael Owen's training programme was going well, although the former England striker will not be considered to face Arsenal.

When Manchester United signed Anderson in 2007 the fee was never officially disclosed but widely put at £18m. It largely passed under the radar that Porto's accounts later revealed they had received €30m (£25.3m at today's exchange rates) for the Brazilian, making him the fifth most expensive player Sir Alex Ferguson has ever bought (behind Dimitar Berbatov, Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastián Verón and Wayne Rooney). It is a lot of money for someone who has scored only two goals in 110 appearances for the club but Anderson is, at least, now playing with the drive and purpose that should be expected. He was full of energy here, one of the outstanding performers of the night.

Worth it?

Yeah but you have to do it at the Euro exchange rate at the time, or at least when the payments of the fee are being/been made.

I'm just posting what the Guardian article said, shet mehn.

Based on the fluctuating exchange rate it could be anything as low as £21 million (if the payments were made before the end of 07, very unlikely) or as high as £25 million (if the payments were made recently, also unlikely) so let's say we're looking at around £23 million.

Anderson is quality..

Im upset they have turned him into a box to box explosive midfielder, as i preferred the no.10 trickster I saw at Porto, but hes got more substance in this role..

Still young, still aint started 20 or ova prem games

He had a sick partnership with Hargreaves, I recall

Of course he aint worth it yet.

However 2-3 months ago certain man would have said Nasri wasn't worth 13m. Things can change quickly.

He's 3 years into a 5 year contract so how long before 'not yet' isn't a valid answer?

Nasri is a quality player who has a definite role in the Arsenal team, yet anderson has been at Man Utd longer and some of their own supporters are still undecided about what his role is. I don't think the way Ferguson has tried to convert him has worked.

haters gonna hate...

Manchester United is pleased to announce that Anderson has signed a new four and a half year contract keeping him at the Club until at least June 2015.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “We are delighted Anderson has signed a new contract. Anderson has developed tremendously since joining the Club and he has fantastic potential at only 22 years of age, he is going to be a really top player.”

Anderson said: “This is the best Club to be at and I would like to thank everyone for the great support I have received over the years. I am looking forward to winning many more trophies with this Club and I am so pleased to have signed a new contract.”
