He's an old-type Conservative, not a Bush-type one, and he was resisting their taking over. He was speaking out against the religious fanatics hijacking the Republican party, dragging it to the reactionary right, objecting to their reaching out to this ocean of idiot prejudiced rednecks. It's one of the big reasons he lost to Bush back then. Now, he wants to win. But Obama comfortably claimed the moderates and centrists (due to the Bush legacy alienating them from Republican party), and McCain ran to these ignorant masses on the far right. Now it's backfiring in a fireball of racism and prejudice, and he's trying to calm everybody down, while also babysitting Palin and trying to make sure she doesn't say anything too stupid. He's not a BushRepublican, but he's mistakenly chose to represent himself as one, to excite the reactionary redneck idiots, instead of fighting for the moderates. Who else are the far right going to vote for anyway?
