Arsenal Summer Transfer Window

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho pulled the plug on Demba Ba's proposed switch to Arsenal because he fears the £42.5million capture of Mesut Ozil has made them genuine title contenders.

Arsene Wenger was left fuming on transfer deadline night after Chelsea made a late U-turn on Ba’s proposed move across London.

The Arsenal manager thought a deal to sign the Senegal striker on a season-long loan deal was in place on Monday night after hours of negotiations between the clubs.

But Mourinho admitted the Blues blocked the Ba deal as they did not want to strengthen a direct rival, and the eleventh hour decision meant Wenger had no time to pursue any other options.

He said: 'Ozil is unique. There is no copy of him – not even a bad one. He is the best number 10 in the world. He makes things very easy for me and for his team-mates with his football vision and the decisions he makes.

'Everyone loves him and sees a bit of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane in him.

'We didn’t accept Arsenal’s offer for Demba Ba because the signing of Ozil makes them title contenders.'

It is understood Ba’s move across London was so far advanced that Arsenal had arranged the former Newcastle forward’s medical.

Wenger was desperate to sign a centre-forward on Monday, knowing Olivier Giroud is currently his only fit recognised striker.

And Chelsea’s decision to end the deal meant Arsenal had no time to pursue alternatives, leaving Wenger worryingly short of attacking options.

Should Giroud pick up an injury, Wenger is likely to turn to Walcott to fill the role of lone centre-forward.

If fit, Lukas Podolski would also be a contender to replace Giroud, but is now feared the 28-year-old could miss the rest of the year.

It was hoped Podolski would make a return from a hamstring tear in November but Dr Hans-Muller Wohlfahrt, who conducted Mesut Ozil’s medical ahead of his £43million move to Arsenal on Monday, says he could miss three months after conducting his own examination.

Podolski told German daily Bild: ‘Unfortunately I’ll be out a long while, around three months.’

I heard what Graham said about that, but then earlier on transfer day Guillem said Wenger and Ozil's dad had made a gentlemans's agreement since last week friday. Others have said United made an enquiry but Real said no. End of the day He signed for Arsenal and that is all what matters.

ARSENAL reported an enormous spike in sales of replica shirts yesterday as fans flocked to celebrate the club record signing of Mesut Ozil.

Sales of shirts via the club’s online store were 12 times higher than normal, a Gunners spokesperson said, while retail outlets at the stadium also reported huge interest, with the overwhelming majority of customers snapping up Ozil’s No11 jersey.

It came as the playmaker posed with an Arsenal shirt for the first time in pictures posted by his new club colleague and Germany team-mate Lukas Podolski on Twitter.

The £42.5m Arsenal paid Real Madrid for Ozil was almost three times their previous record transfer, the £15m purchase of Russian forward Andrey Arshavin in 2009, and saw them abandon their reputation for frugality in spectacular fashion. It was the single biggest fee among the £630m spent by Premier League clubs during the summer window.

Arsenal said they also enjoyed a more modest flurry of interest in tickets following Ozil’s capture. The 24-year-old could make his debut in the trip to Sunderland on 14 September or the Champions League away fixture at Marseille four days later, with his first home game likely to be the visit of Stoke on 22 September.

Ciprian Marica: Linked with move to England

Reports in the Romanian media claim striker Ciprian Marica could be set for a move to England, with Arsenal linked to a possible deal.

The 27-year-old is a free agent after leaving Schalke in the summer, and despite being linked with a host of clubs including Shakhtar Donetsk, Lazio and Inter Milan he remains a free agent.

Now the fact that Marica can move outside the transfer window as he was a free agent before it closes, has made him an interesting options for a number of clubs.

West Ham are said to be keen, but reports from Romania believe that Arsenal could be heading the chase for Marica - who scored for his country in their win over Hungary on Friday.

"Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it's natural that big clubs are eyeing his career," his agent Ioan Becali - who also looks after recent Spurs signing Vlad Chiriches - is quoted by Prosport.ro

Becali even claims that a deal with Arsenal is in the pipeline, adding: "He's close to joining Arsenal, but we have to wait for the next week."

Marica remains with the Romanian squad ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier with Turkey on Tuesday. A win would put them firmly on course for second place in Group D.

Marica has an impressive goal scoring record for his country with over 22 goals in 63 caps.
