Arsenal Summer Transfer Window

Bastia chairman Pierre-Marie Geronimi claims to have rejected an offer from Newcastle United for Florian Thauvin and that Arsenal have also shown an interest in the midfielder.

Newcastle have been busy bolstering their French contingent during the January transfer window and have held a long-standing interest in Thauvin.

The France youth international, who turned 20 on Saturday, has 18 months left on his contract and Bastia say he does not intend to sign an extension.

Geronimi has stated that Newcastle are the only club to have made an offer for Thauvin, but that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been in contact about the player.

"Florian Thauvin has been the object of just one concrete offer so far, from Newcastle, for €3million (£2.6m), but we refused it," Geronimi told France Bleu radio station.

"However, he didn't want to prolong his contract with Bastia, but he will stay until the end of the season."

Regarding Arsenal's interest, Geronimi added: "We have not received any firm offer from Arsenal and, thus, there is no question of the €5m (£4.3m) reported.

"This week I have had Arsene Wenger on the phone twice. He expressed his interest in the player to us, but it has not gone beyond that."

on if he needs a new striker…

Quality-wise no, number-wise, we could be a bit short maybe. Gervinho is not here at the moment. We have Walcott, who can play through the middle and then of course Giroud.

on if he’ll try to sign a new striker…

You do not find them in the street, the strikers that can play for us and strengthen our team. It’s difficult in January.

on if he’s made an offer or enquiry for Stevan Jovetic…

No.

on if he’s confident of signing a midfielder…

I cannot tell you that. In this kind of job it is realism that is important. Realistically I cannot tell you I will sign anyone tomorrow, or Tuesday, as we are not close to doing it.

Arsenal have told Sky Sports News they are not in talks with Barcelona to sign striker David Villa.

There have been suggestions that the Gunners are keen on bringing the 31-year-old Spain international to the Emirates before the close of the transfer window as they look to increase their firepower.

However, these rumours have been dismissed by the London club and Barcelona also reportedly have no intention of selling the player at this time.

Villa played the full 90 minutes in Barcelona's 5-1 win over Osasuna on Sunday but has failed to win a regular starting spot this term after missing last season with a broken leg.

He has made 85 appearances for Spain and is the country's all-time leading goalscorer with 53 goals.

Arsenal were also linked with Villa earlier this month when Barcelona president Sandro Rosell insisted the striker would not be leaving the club.

"I completely rule out the transfer of Villa during the winter market," Rossell said. "He is ours and we need him, there is a lot of the season left."

on Walcott’s deal making the squad settled…
That was very important for us. It gives two messages out. The first is that we want to keep our best players and are capable of doing it. Secondly, offensively, we are not in a position where we have absolutely to be desperate to buy anybody, because Theo can play through the middle and on the flanks.

"Barca do not want to sell David Villa. They've made that very clear," Wenger told reporters.

When asked if there was any room for negotiation, he replied: "No."

"What's important is to buy players who can strengthen the squad. Otherwise, you do nothing. We have enough numbers, quality strikers."

/

So basically if anything we'll sign a younger who nobody has heard of and who won't have any impact on our first 11. Most likely nobody.

Meanwhile...

A company controlled by billionaire real estate and sports mogul Stan Kroenke, whose holdings include the Denver Nuggets basketball team and Colorado Avalanche hockey team, has paid $31.5 million to buy two shopping centers in Colorado Springs.

Limited liability companies formed by The Kroenke Group of Columbia, Mo., recently completed the purchase of the 215,000-square-foot Uintah Gardens at 19th and Uintah streets on the Springs’ west side and the 84,000-square-foot Academy Place, at Academy and Union Boulevards in northern Colorado Springs.

The shopping centers were sold by Houston-based Weingarten Realty.

Uintah Gardens, built in 1974 and a popular retail destination for west side residents, is anchored by a King Soopers grocery. Other tenants include Walgreens, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Petco and an ARC Thrift store.

Academy Place, completed in 1982 and one of the first retail centers built as the city expanded to the north, is anchored by a Safeway grocery and a Target department store. However, The Kroenke Group acquisition includes only the retail space between Target and Safeway; Target owns its store and Safeway leases its space from another owner.

Kroenke Group representatives didn’t return a phone call Monday, but real estate experts say Kroenke’s purchase of the centers shows he’s bullish on the local market.

The defensive problems are deeper than personnel tbh.

Agreed, well somehow

We can't retain the ball well which leaves the defence exposed in transition, then leads to lapses in concentration in tracking back etc

However this could be solved by having better players...who can keep the ball in areas we are not prone to be attacked from

Does Wenger even know the best midfield trio, or even front 3

8 in the morning smh
