Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a target of Pep Guardiola for when the Spaniard starts his tenure as Manchester City manager this summer. The midfielder would be used on the right wing, with Raheem Sterling on the left. John Stones, another young England international, is also under consideration as City look to rebuild under Guardiola.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is known to have impressed the Bayern Munich coach when starring for Arsenal in their 1-1 Champions League draw with the German side in March 2014. Although the plan is for Oxlade-Chamberlain to operate on the right if recruited by City, he impressed in the centre at the Allianz Arena two years ago. Guardiola’s players struggled to contain the midfielder, who was fouled by Dante, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm, and almost beat Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper, with a volley.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is recovering from a knee injury and there has been constant speculation about whether he will stay at Arsenal, where his contract expires in 2018. The prospect of working with Guardiola, let alone a substantial increase in wages, would likely be tempting to the player, who turns 23 in August.
City’s interest may focus contract discussions at the Emirates, but given Oxlade-Chamberlain’s largely disappointing form it will be interesting to see how hard Arsenal fight to keep him. He has performed better for England, scoring five times in 24 matches, than for Arsenal, where he has struck 14 times in 149 appearances.
City’s ambitions under Guardiola will also include a move for Stones. Everton resisted Chelsea’s overtures for their centre back last summer, with the offer rising to £40 million, and the Merseyside club have new funding from Farhad Moshiri, their Iranian benefactor, as well as increased TV revenue.
This tbh. The mention of wages just smacks of a team well aware he's likely played his last game for Arsenal this season and know that only another club coming in for him is likely to get any sort of rise out of Wenger.
Wenger is to blame, if Chambo was under Koeman or even Poch he would have devloped better, obviously there is serious competition at Arsenal but when I first saw Chambo at Soton he could actually pass a ball.
