Racism In Football

Marcelo directly received the abuse however no it isn't about him.

If you were in that Madrid squad it could've easily been you, years ago it was Ashley Cole, SWP and whoever else had the England shirt on in Madrid with dark skin.

Next season it could well be someone else.

It would be nice if Marcelo was to now lead a game changing campaign against racism in football, but how? The game is run by organisations and people who are nearly as backwards as the people hurling the abuse.

That is the issue here. Spanish society is and culture is also possibly an issue. "Some (insert racially offensive term of your choice here) footballer from Brazil isn't gonna change that"

The 48-year-old television pundit said: "I played at West Ham and they were chucking bananas on the pitch, I ate the bananas. I love them!"

Race row: Carlton Palmer believes racism is part of football

Carlton Palmer reckons modern football players should laugh off racist remarks as 'part of the game.'

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City man who appeared 18 times for his country, admitted he had been on the receiving end of abuse because of the colour of his skin.

But Palmer, who retired in 2005, believes players should follow his example by taking it on the chin and get on with the game.

“If you want to intimidate me about my colour, which has happened loads of times, then I’ll just laugh it off," he told talkSPORT.

"If I’m stupid enough to get involved with you because you’re calling me a black something or other, I’ll just laugh it off.

“I played at West Ham and they were chucking bananas on the pitch, I ate the bananas. I love them! It doesn’t worry me. I’m not interested in that. I’m just interested in winning the football game.

“If someone is on a football pitch or in a boxing ring or whatever, you’re in there to win. It is part and parcel of it [to try to put someone off]. And you have to grow up and accept that. And anybody who thinks different is lying. It’s been going on for years.

“When you say it’s not right, if I can intimidate you by saying something that puts you off your game, why isn’t that right?

“That’s not racism. Not for me, it’s not. It depends on the context. Whenever it’s happened to me, and I’m not mentioning any names, I never thought that person was a racist. If they can get me sent off because I react, that’s different. On the pitch, the laws are different.

“Some people for me, and some players, some black players, have used this as an excuse. And then the ones that have actually been racially abused, those incidents are not being dealt with.”

blatter-main-68977018-1580334.jpgControversial: FIFA president Sepp Blatter wants handshakes to settle racist disputes

His remarks will no doubt cause concern to the FA as they have been working hard with the Kick It Out campaign to rid football of racism in recent years.

They come just days before West Brom striker is due to face a disciplinary panel over a questionable goal celebration and weeks after Yaya Toure was abused in Russia while on Champions League duty.

Other recent high-profile cases such as former England skipper John Terry's spat with Anton Ferdinand and Luis Suarez's recent unapologetic stance over his eight match ban for abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in 2011 shows their is still work to be done in this country.

And although some may say it has not been helped with FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s claim that on-pitch racism can be settled with a handshake at the end of the game, Palmer thinks otherwise.

He added: “I agree with Blatter 100%. At the end of the day it’s an easy excuse for colour. Just be the best you can be. And that’s what I’ve done – 750 league games, 18 England caps. You can call me black – it doesn’t matter to me.”

Wondered why this took so long to pop off on here tbh.

Listened to the thing last night and just shaked my head.

Palmer is a cool guy bit of a sap tho, stayed in my hotel in Dubai, and yes his wifey is a white ting.

The same coon who turned down Jamaica if I remember correctly.

this is extreme but fans or players being racist to a group or individual players should not just get lifetime ban should get physical punishment on them e.g a beating or stoneing to death this idea may be throwned upon but it really could kick racism out of football

Charlton legend Chris Powell?

He was probably just giving his people what they want to see. Same way Palmer was giving them what they want to hear.

both victims that have made enough money to convince them to turn a blind eye/ignore certain things.

In other news, but related to the topic

Had an interesting conversation with an ex Chelsea season ticket holder on Saturday.
